Sarpsborg closes all elementary schools and students receive home tuition on the last school day of the year, Friday.
– We see that the contagion situation worsens almost hour by hour. Therefore, we must take these measures, says Mayor Sindre Martinsen-Evje (Labor).
Last week 102 infected people were confirmed in the municipality. More than 40 of them are associated with various Christian congregations.
24 students quarantined on Christmas Eve
The same week, several students and teachers from Kruseløkka ungdomsskole begged for tuition at home. They were not heard by the municipality.
Marikken Christensen and Nora Kolstad-Abelson (15) are students at the school. Last week, they posted a sentence on Instagram.
– We wrote that we thought it was bad that politicians didn’t give us a homeschool week, so that we could have the Christmas break we deserve after a very rough year with irregular homeschooling, quarantines and many things, says Christensen .

The post received more than 4,000 “hearts” and 400 comments. The student council also had a meeting with the municipal chief, but he was not listened to.
The girls were right in their concern. 24 students and a teacher from the school must now spend Christmas Eve in quarantine. A student in the class tested positive for corona on Wednesday, according to Sarpsborg Arbeiderblad.
– I’m upset. We have told politicians that this can happen and we have warned them. Why can’t they hear us? It’s very sad for those who are quarantined at Christmas, says Kolstad-Abelson.
The girls come out of quarantine, but they believe the school closure will come too late.
– I think the way politicians have handled this is very bad and badly thought out, says Kolstad-Abelson.
Does not exclude stricter measures
The mayor says schools cannot be closed as a preventive measure.
– Our municipal chief doctors assessed the situation. At the time, there was no reason for infection control to close schools. That landscape has changed today, says Martinsen-Evje.
He feels sorry for the students who have to celebrate Christmas in quarantine.
– I think it’s terribly heavy, it’s sad. But it is also very sad that we have a growing wild infection in Sarpsborg. We must take control of this situation to have a good and safe Christmas celebration.

Already on December 1, Sarpsborg, in collaboration with Fredrikstad, introduced more stringent corona measures. But the infection has not subsided.
In the last four days, 75 new cases of infection have been confirmed in Sarpsborg. Now the municipality warns that there may be even stricter measures.
– What worries us most is that there are more and more cases of unknown infection routes. There are probably a large number of dark people in the Sarpsborg community and it is concerning.
