– A strong recommendation on the use of masks did not give the effect expected by the municipal management. Recently, there has been an increase in infection and the municipality is now stepping up infection control measures, the Trondheim municipality states in a press release.
Starting Wednesday, there will be an order for masks in indoor public places, such as in shopping malls and restaurants, but also outdoors in densely populated areas. Violations can result in fines or imprisonment.
The order applies to all people born before 2008, but not to people who, for health or other reasons, cannot wear a mask. Students and employees of schools, extracurricular clubs, and kindergartens are also not covered by the order.
The regulation applies until January 9, but can be extended if necessary.
Two big eruptions
On December 12, 30 new cases of infection were registered in Trondheim. This is the highest number of infections in the municipality since the pandemic began. So far, 32 more have been infected after this.
– We have recently experienced an increase in infection. It has been mainly related to two major outbreaks that have spread to other settings. This has resulted in extensive infection tracking work and great pressure on testing, Harry Tiller, communications manager in Trondheim municipality, tells Dagbladet.
– Unclear
When asked if they have control over the situation, Tiller responds that they have recently seen several cases of unknown infection that create new challenges.
– So far we think we have a pretty good control of the situation, but it is confusing and unpredictable. It is important to remind the public to limit their close contacts, keep their distance, and follow infection control rules.
Due to the current infection situation, Tiller believes that an increase in infection should be expected in the future. Whether this will lead to further precautionary measures or measures in the future is continually assessed.
