“We put ‘Elves over the woods and hello’ back on Dplay, with a poster that individual items from the 2011 series of shows may appear outdated and be perceived as offensive.”

– It was correct to cancel the broadcast of “Nissene over skog og hei”, when we learned that the portrayal of one of the characters in the series may be perceived as particularly discriminatory and offensive in 2020. If we had done more thorough editorial work before publication, this series would not appear on television again this year. We would not promote it on Dplay either. We made a mistake: we just didn’t keep up with the class, writes Skoland.

In the article, he adds that this is something they need to learn from.

– We have learned that we have to think again about our file. This thinking must take into account both how we can act as a responsible social actor now, and as a responsible steward of history so far. The solution is to tag the content of the file that looks different and is perceived as offensive in the current context.

On December 3, Dplay decided to unpublish the television series “The Santas over the forest and hello.” It was also taken off the TVNorge screen. This after the criticism of the Instagram account @ racisme.i.norge.

The reason was that one of the ratings according to the streaming service fell under the “blackface concept”.

“Blackface” is an American term used to make a white person appear dark to make them look like a person with a dark skin color. The character in question here is Ernst-Øyvind, played by comedian Espen Eckbo.

Skoland further writes that it has been an educational discussion for them in the wake of the events. He writes that he has brought more voices to the field and that, therefore, there have been more nuances on the subject.
