– We see that not enough people have fulfilled our strong calling, says City Manager Morten Wolden.

On Thursday of last week, the municipality of Trondheim issued a clear recommendation to residents to wear masks in public spaces, such as shopping malls and restaurants.

This weekend, the municipality has had security guards to see how people have followed the call of the municipality.

Feedback from these has helped lay the groundwork for Wolden to now call on politicians to introduce a ban on the use of face masks.

– It is necessary to extend this to a court order and through a regulation specify where and who is covered by the court order, says Wolden.

On Saturday, the municipality had a record number of detected cases of covid-19.

30 people tested positive for the virus this day, also the days before the numbers were just under 30.

Disparate infection rates

Since before, the municipality has ordered masks when traveling by public transport and by taxi.

– We are concerned that each individual should take whatever steps they can to limit the spread, says Trondheim Township Communications Manager Harry Tiller.

Figures on the number of infected from day to day in Trondheim vary.

While there were 30 cases tested on Saturday, the number dropped to nine on Sunday.

– This also has to do with the staffing of the test stations. It’s too early to draw conclusions on whether the numbers are increasing or decreasing, but we will know more during the week, says Tiller.

Tiller notes that it is very important for people to limit the number of close contacts.

The municipality has long had low infection rates compared to Bergen and Oslo, but some of the infection in the city comes from unknown sources.

– There are unknown sources of infection that concern us, fortunately this development has not exploded, says Tiller.

It will take a few days

– There are a series of formal routines that we have to go through. An extraordinary meeting for the presidency set as city council is called next Wednesday, says Tiller.

In Bergen and Oslo, there are already requirements for the use of face masks or face masks in public transport, taxis, shops and other public places. The requirement applies when it is not possible to maintain a distance of at least one meter.
