– It was great coming here. The fridge was full, the mulled wine was on the table and I had a cup of tea, says Mathilde Paaske.

Just a couple of hours ago, she and her roommate landed at Stavanger Sola airport, now they have stayed at the family cabin in Ogna in Jæren.

Here they can have legal entry quarantine, after the government changed the rules this afternoon.

The quarantine cabin

– It was great that the government chose to listen to everyone who wanted to go home for Christmas. I know of many others in the same situation who are also happy with this, says Paaske. She and her partner live and work in London, but want to celebrate Christmas with Easter’s family in Stavanger.

When it emerged earlier this week that there could be changes to the quarantine scheme for people coming from abroad, Paaske and the partner took a chance and bought a trip.

The quarantine hotel was out of the question. Then they would have come back.

– Sitting in a hotel for ten days and then celebrating Christmas a couple of days before the trip home, I didn’t want that. Then I would have preferred to be in our nice London apartment, he says.

An hour and a half before the plane landed Sunday night, it became clear that they could legally have their quarantine time in the family cabin.

His father, Henrik Paaske, is one of several who have protested the plan as it stood. Now he is happy for the change and for bringing his daughter home for Christmas.

– This was sensible and I understand that it is the result of a pretty good pressure, he says.

Nice welcome

Safer than hotels

It is Henrik Paaske and his wife who filled the refrigerator and prepared the cabin, before the daughter and the sambuar arrived.

Here by the sea in Ogna, everyone thinks that infection control inspections are well cared for.

– Now we are my roommate and I in a cabin. It is much safer than a hotel. Here, for example, no one is going to serve us food, he says.

During today’s press conference, the Minister of Justice and Emergency Management, Monica Mæland, said that the main rule is that quarantine must be carried out in hotels.

– But if you own or rent a home, or have your own city, you can quarantine there.

For the city to be counted as “own”, it must have:

  • Someone
  • Access to own bathroom
  • Access to own kitchen or meal service
