Supermercados, Wholesale | Christmas items up to four times more expensive than last year:

[ad_1]

Rema 1000, Kiwi and Extra are strongly announcing this year’s Christmas price cuts. But the products they sell are up to four times more expensive than at the same time last year.

On December 9, 2019, Nidar’s Christmas marzipan with chocolate was 65 grams for just NOK 4, while marzipan pork without chocolate coating was NOK 4.20 in Kiwi. The next day the price was 4.20 for a small Christmas marzipan with chocolate at Rema 1000.

A year later, the prices are completely different. On December 10, the price is more than four times higher, at NOK 16.90 for small marzipan pigs in Kiwi and NOK 17.70 in Rema.

You shouldn’t believe this when you see the networks’ own ad campaigns. Both Rema, Kiwi and Extra are heavily advertised price cuts and low prices for holiday items right now.

Please refer to the price table at the bottom of the box to compare prices for selected holiday items from December 9, 2019 to December 10, 2020.

– I think people notice it, because many ask me when I think the price war starts. It’s usually early December, so there probably won’t be anything else this year, says Rune Nikolaisen, who is behind Gjerrigknark.com.

– But maybe they’ll try something later in December, who knows? he asks.

The Christmas marzipan pork has certainly dropped in price somewhat since it hit stores earlier this fall. On November 18, the price in Kiwi was 26.40 for the without chocolate and 26.90 for the variant with chocolate. At Rema, the price was 26.90 for both variants.

Korona affects the price war

There was also no ordinary price war before Easter this year, as it used to be. The crown crisis put an end to that. However, Kiwi started a major price war on April 17, a week after Good Friday.

Recently, Kiwi and Meny also announced that they will remove Triple-Trump in December for infection control reasons. At the same time, the three low-price chains are constantly cutting prices, although they are not falling as low as last year.

– They know very well that people have to go to stores. People buy anyway. It’s obvious to wear the crown as a reason all the time, says Nikolaisen.

– I feel that the chains are taking advantage of the situation of the crown. It’s okay that you can defend infection rates and don’t want people to pile up, but it’s in disgust, he says.

Nikolaisen points out that this goes beyond people with bad advice.

– It is broken if many with bad finances have waited for the prices of Christmas items to drop, and then not. They must be disappointed, he says, and explains:

– I think many are left out, and more this year than before. There are many who have to count and turn the crowns.

Reduces the price of more important goods

Kristine Aakvaag Arvin, communications manager for Kiwi, argues, however, that the price cut for Christmas items is not as strong as last year, and that, for example, marzipan pigs and sugar are multiplying in price .

– Why don’t you have lower prices this year? In any case, it has already started several price wars / campaigns after the crown arrived in March.

– The situation this year is completely different from the same period last year. By Christmas this year, a record number of items have dropped in price – a total of about 600 items have been cut and will be priced lower until Christmas, says Arvin, noting:

– We believe that customers benefit more from the fact that we push the prices of hundreds of important products than they can buy sauerkraut and powdered sugar for two crowns.

She points out that customers can save 30 to 40 crowns on both cheese and salmon, among other things.

According to Arvin, Kiwis think it is better to spend money slashing the prices of many hundreds of products, than to almost give away a selection of products, as has been done before Christmas in recent years.

However, he notes that both marzipan and powdered sugar are important pre-Christmas products, and both are discounted in price but not as cheap as last year.

– Melis normally costs NOK 14.90 and is therefore now almost cut in half, says Arvin.

For the record: powdered sugar cost 2.6 kroner in Kiwi at the same time last year and is therefore three times more expensive this year.

– More satisfied customers

Rema 1000 has also been asked about this year’s price war and why prices are not as low this year as last year.

– We will have the lowest possible prices, and the competition for December this year is in full swing, but the products on which there is price pressure always vary from year to year, says Calle Hägg, public relations and communications manager of Row 1000.

Rema, like Kiwi and Extra, has cut the prices of several hundred items, both Christmas items and regular items, something Hägg also points out.

– Of course, we can’t comment on future prices, but it’s still coming down, and we can promise customers can make bargains on Rema 1000 until Christmas, he says.

You have not directly answered the question of what you think about the fact that there is such a large price difference for, for example, marzipan pigs between December 9, 2019 and December 10, 2020. However, Coop it has done.

– What do you think of the fact that the price of marzipan pork 65 gr in Extra has doubled since the same time last year?

I think then everyone who wants can buy a marzipan pig or two for Christmas, unlike last year where several stores were left empty due to extremely low prices. In a recent poll YouGov has conducted on behalf of Extra, says Harald Kristiansen, Coop’s communications manager.

– Half of the respondents were asked if it bothers them that it was sold for price war goods. So this year we get even more satisfied customers, who are also our co-owners, he says.

– Low prices

– Why don’t you have lower prices this year? In any case, he has already participated in several price wars / campaigns that he has started and followed Kiwi in, after the crown arrived in March.

The prices are low. There is little difference between the total price of this shopping basket this year and last year, says Kristiansen, and he refers to the Nettavisen price table on the bottom of the box.

He points out that Extra came out in record time already on November 13 with cuts in the prices of Christmas items to take into account that infection control by trade is better distributed over time.

– There is still a long way to go before Christmas, and that means we will have a longer price war this year, which will generally give customers a reasonable shopping basket for Christmas, he says.

– Do you think there will be no more price war on Christmas items this year or can it still happen?

– It is impossible to say anything about how prices will evolve towards Christmas Eve, but we note that, in general, there are very low prices for a number of typical Christmas items, says Kristiansen.

He points out that this, in addition to the “closed” borders, is the reason Extra experiences a record of daytime trading in its stores.

Price changed 709 times

The situation was completely different just a year ago.

– Christmas is two weeks away, and the competition is tougher and tougher than in a long time. At the Extra chain, we have made 709 price changes today. So the time ahead will show if prices fall further, Kristiansen at Coop Norge told Nettavisen on Dec. 9.

He pointed out that 709 items have not been lowered in price, but have changed the price of some items up to several times due to competition from other chains.

Also in Kiwi, prices plummeted on Monday, December 9, 2019.

– Today has been completely texas on the price front, and several items have dropped in price today. Today we have adjusted down the prices of several hundred items, Arvin told Nettavisen at the time.
