Texas’ unusual battle to invalidate election results in the states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan is intensifying.
On Tuesday, the Republican and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit on behalf of the state. In the lawsuit, it is claimed once again that extensive electoral fraud was carried out in this year’s presidential elections, again without any concrete evidence being presented for the allegations.
The goal is to overthrow the election result and allow state leaders to elect voters themselves and thus have the opportunity to change the outcome to keep President Donald Trump in the White House.
All four leading states have responded to Texas’ lawsuit, describing it as “an example of rebellious abuse of justice” (Pennsylvania), “a lawsuit without evidence” (Michigan), “an extraordinary intervention” (Wisconsin) and “a claim that should be dismissed ”(Georgia).
On Friday, the US Supreme Court will meet to discuss whether it should rule on the lawsuit or whether it should be rejected.
– Do you think the lawsuit will come out?
– No no no. There is no possibility at sea for that. It would mean the end of the consultation, US expert and advisor to the Civita think tank, Eirik Løkke, tells Dagbladet.
You want Texas outside of the US.
– An attempted clown punch
One of the reasons Paxton believes the election results in the four tipping states should be invalidated is that the states used the crown pandemic as an “excuse” for the electoral rule changes that Paxton claims were. illegal.
The lawsuit has received support from 17 states. In addition, more than 100 members of the House of Representatives have endorsed him. Trump also supports the lawsuit and asks the Supreme Court Friday night to rule on the matter:
If the Supreme Court shows great wisdom and courage, the American people will win perhaps the most important case in history, and our electoral process will be respected again!
– Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 11, 2020
– It would be bad enough if the Supreme Court took the lawsuit to a hearing. Trump’s fight to change the election outcome has been a mix of absurd theories and public relations stunts. It undermines democratic norms and rules, and the worst thing is that so many members of the Republican Party sit still on the boat and participate in part. It’s a coup, says Løkke.
The American expert describes the Texas lawsuit, and Trump’s fight in general, as “an embarrassment” supported by Republican members who “lost their moral compass long ago” and are “now in deep water.”
– The lawsuit really only reflects what Trump has done in the past four years: concocting crazy theories and undermining democratic values. This is simply an attempted clown punch, he says.
Joe Biden received the most votes in the four swing states in the presidential election in early November. According to Paxton, the consequences of alleged violations of the constitution should be that state electorates are not counted when the next president of the United States is appointed.
The 538 voters, nominated by all 50 states and the capital, Washington, will meet on December 14 to formally vote for the next president. The result of the Electoral Assembly is scheduled for January 6 and Congress approves it that same day.
Biden took 306 voters after this year’s election, while Trump took 232. It takes 270 voters to win the US presidential election.
– Depending on the bad losers
Democracy depends on the bad losers, Løkke believes. He notes that when Texas and Republicans now cast so much doubt on the election outcome, it becomes even more difficult for Biden to unite an already divided country when he takes power.
The other senator from Texas, Republican John Corney, has also spoken out and misinterpreted the lawsuit.
– To be honest, I struggle to see the basis and legal basis for it, he has stated to CNN reporter Manu Raju.
Georgetown University professor Paul Smith, according to NTB, said he had “never seen anything like it” and refers to:
– This idea that one state on the Supreme Court can claim that a vote was incorrectly cast in another state.
Smith believes Texas may have significant difficulty explaining why the state has grounds for the lawsuit.
Rejected with a phrase
– The safest option in US history.
Representatives of the US electoral authorities have previously said in a statement that there is no evidence that the ballots were changed or lost during this year’s presidential elections.
The Nov. 3 elections were the safest in U.S. history, says a joint statement by two committees, one made up of federal and government officials, the other made up of private partners, all responsible for the security and conduct of the elections. .
Justice Minister William Barr, one of Trump’s allies, also said in early December that the Justice Department had found no evidence of serious voter fraud or mistakes that could change the outcome.
– Such lawsuits and allegations of electoral fraud are nothing more than political games and attempts at public relations. They send signals to their constituents, leading some supporters to believe that major electoral fraud has been committed. Of course, there will be technical errors and some votes will be rejected in the election, but the fact is that this has been the safest election in modern American history, Civita Løkke’s adviser tells Dagbladet.
