Five dissensions in the new party program of the Liberal Party

There are a total of five dissensions on the Storting’s electoral program to be adopted at the national meeting this spring. There is little in the liberal context.

– Usually it is around ten o’clock, says MP Sveinung Rotevatn to Dagbladet.

He has led the work of the program committee, which presented its final draft on Thursday night.

– It’s short and concise and only 50 pages, says Rotevatn.

He assumed the chairmanship of the program committee after Guri Melby, when she became party leader.

– Now it’s up to the members to give their opinion. It’s the national meeting in April that decides what the final program will look like, says Melby.

Prioritize what is most important

BATTLE OF LEADERSHIP: Before the national meeting this fall, there were three candidates for the position of leader of the Liberal Party. “It is good that there are many of us who have wanted to carry the Liberal Party forward,” Sveinung Rotevatn told Dagbladet at the time. The program committee of the Liberal Party has been made up of fifteen people, including two deputies. Rotevatn says the goal of the work has been to sharpen the message of the Liberal Party on the most important issues.

– It is the fight for the climate, a better school and the growth of jobs and companies after the crisis of the crown, he says.

When the first draft of a new party program was presented earlier this fall, it happened without dissent. But now there are five in all. What happened?

– We wanted to present a first draft without dissent because they are very decisive for the debate, says Rotevatn.

Now the first draft has been circulated among the members, who have been able to send their contributions.

Wine and cannabis

Two of the dissidents are related to the disagreement over the removal of customs protection on imports of agricultural products and cuts in agricultural aid. In addition, five of the program committee members have disagreed on the question of whether the wine can be sold in stores.

The majority in the Liberal Party program committee is in favor of this. It is a joint committee that wants to allow stores to open on Sundays and the sale of strong beer in stores. Health policy spokesman Carl-Erik Grimstad is among those who support dissent.

There is also disagreement over the wording of the draft program that advocates evaluating “strict and controlled sales of cannabis, for example through pharmacies.”

Health tax

The latest dissent is related to the wealth tax. The young leader of the Liberal Party, Sondre Hansmark, is behind this, along with committee members Mia Bruvik and Amanda Rygg.

All three believe that the Liberal Party should not work for a further reduction of the wealth tax, but maintain a moderate wealth tax.

– We want to ensure that it is more profitable to invest in productive businesses than in real estate, through a more equitable valuation of assets. The lower deduction should be increased to protect ordinary people and start-ups, stated in the justification for dissent.

– A better tax

Sondre Hansmark defends his point of view on wealth tax in a discussion post on Dagbladet.

– The wealth tax should not be eliminated, it should be improved, he says.

– It is important to preserve the small economic differences and the great opportunities in Norway. We should lower taxes on what gives more value creation, but we should not prioritize tax cuts over what does not increase value creation, says the leader of the Young Left.

It points out that the return on equity is growing faster than the rest of the economy.

– So the reductions in wealth tax mean that those with wealth will deduct even more than they do today. The Liberal Party should prioritize tax cuts for ordinary people who are not experiencing big pay increases, Hansmark notes.

The draft program of the Liberal Party

* The Liberal program advocates, among other things, maintaining the benefits of the electric car until 2025, more electives in upper secondary and the right to implement for upper secondary students.

* There is also an agreement on simplifications for companies, more free trade and international cooperation, as well as shops open on Sundays.
