Hospitals in the southern city of Sweden are unable to isolate potential corona patients and now place people with respiratory problems in the same room. Write Aftonbladet.
– We lack space and people, says Sören Nordh, who is Vårdförbundet’s main union delegate in the city.
Don’t feel safe
Right now, Helsingborg is the worst affected city in all of Sweden with 687 corona cases per 100,000. That is three times the national average.
Now the hospital staff are shouting warnings.
– It doesn’t feel good when we have to compromise security. Many are frustrated and there is great discomfort among those who work in hospitals when we can no longer follow our own safety guidelines, says Nordh, who is himself a specialist nurse.
The city’s emergency room is sized to receive 140 patients. Now it comes between 200 and 250 daily.
Black Friday
One of the reasons for the explosive infection may be last week’s Black Friday.
– There were many, many people and few who kept their distance, Cathline Lundblad tells Aftonbladet. She herself was in town that day and experienced long lines where people were very close together.
– We’ve seen an increase in patient numbers that coincides with pay weekends and Black Friday, says hospital manager Harald Roos.
Yesterday Prime Minister Stefan Löfven came out and asked the Swedes to keep their distance and avoid buses and trains so that as many people as possible can celebrate Christmas.
– This year we cannot celebrate Christmas as usual, and we cannot celebrate with all those with whom we usually celebrate it, said Löfven, who set a limit that eight people can meet in social gatherings.
In total, more than 7,000 people have died of corona in Sweden. Almost 280,000 Swedes are infected.
