Mobile, Telenor | Brexit may surprise Norwegian mobile customers:

[ad_1]

Starting in the new year, the EU’s roaming agreement with the UK will end. It is unclear what this means for Norwegian customers.

– There will be some changes starting January 1 that you need to prepare for.

Trade and Industry Minister Iselin Nybø (Liberal Party) calls on the business community to familiarize themselves with the new difficulties that will arise in trade when the UK exits the internal market.

– We have had such a close and intimate relationship with the UK for so long. We will continue to have that. But there will be some changes that I think many have not thought will have practical consequences, Nybø tells NTB.

He is still concerned about how Norwegian businesses will be affected when post-Brexit transition agreements expire in the new year. Individuals may also receive some surprises, for example, the agreement that provides “free mobile flow” expires.

Unclear consequences

Starting in the new year, the transitional agreement with the EU will end, and Brexit will be taken seriously. This means, for example, that British people can no longer participate in the four EU freedoms, such as being able to work and apply for jobs in other EU countries (and EEA countries), without having entered into special agreements with each state. individual member.

For Norwegians, Brexit also has a number of consequences. The EU roaming agreement will no longer apply to the British.

This means that the equal price guarantee for calls, SMS and mobile data across national borders in the EU / EEA expires.

It’s unclear what Brexit will have to say for Norwegian mobile phone users, say the two dominant players, Telenor and Telia.

– If Brexit will have consequences, we must return to. At Telenor, we do our best to offer roaming services at competitive prices, and this will also apply in a possible new deal with the UK, says communications manager David Fidjeland at Telenor Norway in an email to Nettavisen.

Telia also doesn’t have a clear answer on what the consequences will be, but she won’t make any changes to the terms right away:

– We have no concrete plans to change them, but it will depend, among other things, on what happens to the level of costs in the UK in the future. If they choose to increase our prices, we must necessarily do a new evaluation, says Ellen Scheen, information manager at Telia.

New obstacles

A temporary agreement between the UK, Iceland and Norway was signed in London on Tuesday. It enters into force on January 1 and ensures that merchandise trade can continue without major interruptions.

But in many other areas, new trade barriers will emerge, warns Trade and Industry Minister Iselin Nybø:

  • Brits who move to Norway after January 1 must apply for a residence permit as third-country citizens.
  • The EU rules on free roaming will no longer apply in the UK.
  • The UK expects delays in the flow of goods across borders.
  • Veterinary control of seafood at borders will be gradually introduced in the UK during the first half of the year. Norway will introduce this type of border control on UK goods from the New Year.
  • Norwegian companies will lose the automatic right to participate in a series of tenders in the UK.
  • The requirements of the Norwegian Company Law and the Limited Liability Company Law that the CEO and at least half of the board must be affiliated with Norway and the EEA will come into effect on January 1. This means that 800 Norwegian companies must make changes.

Fully distributor

The temporary goods agreement that is in effect will apply until a full free trade agreement takes effect. The deal was signed on Tuesday by Norway’s Charge d’Affaires Vibeke Rysst-Jensen and UK Head of Negotiations Charlotte Heyes in London.

Negotiations on a comprehensive agreement are now in full swing:

– We will establish this agreement as soon as possible in 2021, Nybø tells NTB.
