AL-HOL IN SYRIA / OSLO (Aftenposten): 40,000 children grow up in the Al-Hol refugee camp. Many mothers are raising their children to be like their fathers – a new generation of IS fighters.
The group of children smiles and laughs. Some of the children are barefoot, most wear sandals. They all have sand in their hair. They playfully run between the yellow and white tents in the Al-Hol refugee camp in Syria.
They remember most children. But not quite. Many children between the ages of seven and ten gather around us. One of them shouts a few words and the gang responds rhythmically.
– “God is the greatest”, they shout pointing to the sky, as we have seen the jihadists do. And: “The Islamic State must remain.”
Aftenposten has been to Al-Hol many times in recent years. This time we notice a clear change. In the past, several women would settle in and ask us for tea or juice. Now they show us the finger, they are aggressive and hostile.
