– The biggest outbreak we’ve ever had

– This is probably the biggest outbreak we have had of covid-19. As far as I know, we haven’t had a large number in quarantine, Ola Morten Teigen, municipal director in Hadsel, tells Dagbladet.

On Monday, it emerged that between 700 and 800 people had been quarantined at Hadsel and Andøy in Nordland. Hadsel has about 8000 inhabitants. So far, 19 have tested positive for covid-19 and around 400 pieces have been quarantined.

Teigen believes that the infection must travel to southern Norway.

– It appears that we have traced the infection to one of two specific trips to southern Norway. Closer is hard to say for sure.

The municipal director says that the quarantine and other measures continue, but that the crisis management has new meetings every day to evaluate new measures and monitor the situation closely.

– The most important thing is to prevent new infections. We do this through quarantine and shutting down activities where the infection could have likely spread. Additionally, intensive work is being done on infection tracking and testing of anyone who may have been involved in the infection in this outbreak.

I had no control

To NRK, which first covered the case, Ingebjørn Bleidvin, chief physician at Hadsel, said they had no control.

– All the time there are still new close contacts who are not in quarantine, and today we have 70 on trial, so we can’t say that, no. But we are on the right track, Bleidvin said Monday night.

– We believe that the measures are beginning to work, as most of the newly infected have close contacts who are already in quarantine.

When asked how the situation is on Tuesday, the municipal director responds that they are waiting for yesterday’s test results before they can say anything else.

– A large number of samples have been taken in the last few days, and we have not received a response to the last ones yet It will be possible to say something more concrete later tonight, he tells Dagbladet.

However, on Tuesday afternoon, the municipality reports that today’s test results show no new positive corona cases in Hadsel.

– This is very good news, and you must allow him to enjoy today’s result, but we must not believe that this is over, says infection control doctor Martin Larsen Drageset in a press release.

– Covid-19 is a disease with a long incubation period, it can take up to 14 days before symptoms appear. It has been only a short time since most of the positives became infected, and therefore your close contacts may continue to develop the disease in the near future. It is going in the right direction, but it can still change, Bleidvin says in the press release.

The whole school quarantined

The outbreak in Hadsel has also had consequences for the neighboring municipality, Andøy, where 320 people were quarantined last week.

– Never before have so many been in quarantine, Andøy municipal doctor Astrid Holm tells Dagbladet.

According to Holm, the infection dates back to the neighboring municipality of Hadsel, where a company employee was confirmed to be infected. This person’s family had close contacts to varying degrees in Andenes ungdomsskole, prompting the municipality to decide to quarantine the 270 students. 70 people outside the school were also quarantined.

– If we have no new cases of infection this week, we will open the school again on Monday. We have no other measures than national recommendations, says the municipal chief.

Andøy has around 5,000 residents and received its first confirmed case of Covid-19 in August. So far, a total of 17 people have tested positive in the municipality.

– I encourage people to be careful with infection control measures. There is also infection on this side of the country, he says.
