A year ago the coronavirus appeared in this Wuhan market.

In a short time, 4,000 people died in the Chinese city.

When the authorities reacted for the first time, things happened quickly. In ten days, Wuhan got a new hospital.

The measures worked. Now life has returned to normal.

That’s all Zhang Yang sees when he visits the fresh food market. The place where it all started.

The last time we spoke to the 44-year-old was in March. Then he sat alone in the apartment, in the middle of a 76-day lockdown. At Easter time alone, Wuhan’s 11 million residents escaped.

As you walk around town today, the stores are open. The restaurants are full. Public transport works normally.

And in the small fresh food market right next to where he lives, across the Yangtze River that divides Wuhan in two, the carcasses of animals hang in a row, just like they used to.

But not everything is as before.
