Much of southern Norway gets a wet, cold, and possibly snowy Thursday, while it gets better further north.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued two yellow hazard warnings for heavy snow. The forecast applies from midnight to Thursday for Telemark, Agder, Akershus and Buskerud. The amount of snow and where you expect the snow line to be varies:

– For Akershus and Buskerud, it can snow up to 100-300 meters, it’s quite low, says Trond Lien, meteorologist on duty at Nettavisen.

Up to 6 inches of snow is expected here, much less than the two areas further south-west:

– We expect the highest rainfall in Agder and Telemark. There may be a lot of snow. Here we have set the snow limit at 400-600 meters, it is not very high, says Lien.

Depending on the hazard forecast for the last two geographic areas, locally there may be up to 20-50 centimeters of snow.

The relatively large difference in the number of centimeters of snow and the snow line has its natural explanation:

– There is usually more precipitation in Agder and Telemark due to the direction of the wind, while there are usually slightly lower temperatures inland in eastern Norway, explains the meteorologist.

The rest of the country has mixed weather on Thursday, but less risk of snow:

– In western Norway it will rain a little tomorrow, but not as much as in Agder. Trøndelag and Møre og Romsdal will have mostly pleasant weather, while further north there will be some precipitation early in the day, Lien concludes.
