A car has run over several people on a pedestrian street in the German city of Trier, in southwestern Germany.

Eyewitnesses tell the SWR newspaper that the driver must have done it on purpose, driven at full speed and directed at people.

On Twitter, the police ask people to stay away.

According to local media, the reporter in Trier confirms that two people have died. Also confirms the German police.

– We have two who have been confirmed dead and at least 15 seriously injured. We try to get an overview. All the emergency preparedness in the regions has been activated and we are mainly trying to save the injured people, Wolfram Leibe, mayor of Trier tells the SWR newspaper.

There must be at least 15 wounded.

The car, a Range Rover, nearly flew into the pedestrian zone, according to eyewitnesses.

At SWR, police say the driver has been arrested.

The city center is blocked and nobody escapes the police barricades.

The city of Trier is located about 200 kilometers west of Frankfurt, on the border with Luxembourg. The city of about 110,000 inhabitants is known for its large Roman gate, Porta Nigra, located near the pedestrian zone.
