Republican Senator Doug Mastriano is said to have rushed out of a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday last week after being informed that he tested positive for COVID-19. The Associated Press news agency reports.
Mastriano and several Republicans are said to have arrived at the presidential residence shortly after attending a four-hour rally in Gettysburg, several without face masks, to discuss efforts to overthrow Joe Biden’s electoral victory in Pennsylvania.
According to the news agency source, the president is said to have told Mastriano that medical staff at the presidential residence would take care of him, his son and his son’s friend, who were present at the meeting. All three tested positive for covid-19.
Increased infection and strict measures.
The infection situation in the United States remains dire. Before the weekend, up to 90,000 Covid-19 patients received treatment in American hospitals. There are twice as many hospitalized patients as just a month ago and, according to Reuters, capacity has exploded in some hospitals.
The news comes at a time when many Americans are gathering to celebrate Thanksgiving and spend a weekend with family, raising fears that an even worse infection spike is coming.
Now Trump can get in trouble
On Monday morning there were 13.7 million cases of infection in the United States. More than 273,000 people have lost their lives so far in the pandemic.
In San Francisco, the rise in infection is so high that residents must abide by a curfew and various other restrictions beginning Monday, NTB writes. The same is true for several counties in California.
In New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday that city schools will reopen after ten days of closure, despite a growing trend of infection.
Everyone around the president must test themselves
Donald Trump was known to be infected with the virus in October and received treatment at the hospital.
Anyone who stays close to the president must take the covid-19 test. Several staff members and others working closely with the president also tested positive, including first lady Melania Trump and two of the president’s children.
Participants in Wednesday’s meeting were also evaluated, but the results were not clear until they were in the west wing.
