For decades the Canary Islands have been a winter favorite for Scandinavian tourists, this year the situation is completely different. This is what the largest charter companies tell Dagens Industri.
Company order figures show only a quarter of orders compared to a normal winter season.
Norwegians, Danes, and Swedes want to travel, but are happy to book summer and winter vacations in a year.
– Don’t stop completely at the market
– We speak to more people who would like to travel but are not sure what will happen next. There are also people who are not sure what their neighbors will say if they travel abroad. At the same time, there is also a higher proportion of people who say they have had corona and now have antibodies and who take the opportunity to travel now, says Swedish manager Erika Butterworth at Apollo to Dagens Industri.
The desire to travel has not disappeared for Norwegians either.
– There is no full stop in the market. We receive orders, but people are a little doubtful about what happens. We see many who book trips for the summer and next winter. Those who call and book do so because they want to travel. It’s been a long time since they traveled, press officer Kevin Brevik in Tui tells DN about the Norwegian market.
Brevik says that those who have booked trips aim to be able to travel in the summer or into the winter of next year.
– The most popular is Greece and for the winter season is Gran Canaria.
Canary approach
Before the corona pandemic, charter companies could offer trips to several continents, now the selection for Scandinavian users is very limited. As the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against travel outside of Europe, charter companies have chosen to only offer trips to the Spanish islands, Gran Canaria.
However, travel restrictions and quarantine rules lead to a decreased appetite for travel among sun-hungry Swedes.
– Reservations are a quarter compared to a normal winter. It is difficult for us to know what it will be like in the future. It all depends on what happens in the development of the pandemic, communications manager Adam Györki at TUI tells Dagens Industri.
Apollo, TUI and Ving have drastically lowered prices and introduced generous cancellation offers without being able to return to normal reservation numbers. Apollo bookings through the New Year are 30 percent of normal, while for January-February they are 40 percent compared to a normal winter season.
