Brighton and VAR punished Liverpool – Klopp reacted with sarcasm – VG

Television footage showed the German manager addressing the lineman with sarcastic applause, after what must have been a frustrating afternoon for Liverpool.

At first, everyone thought that Mohamed Salah had sent the league champions in the lead before the break. But the VAR bus stormed in, measured his inches and found the Egyptian offside as he kicked off between Brighton duo Ben White and Lewis Dunk and passed the ball to Mat Ryan. The same thing happened again in the second half. Then in the 1-0 position, and then with the replacement of Salah Sadio Mané: the African put his head in a set piece and drove in what everyone thought was 2-0.

But again, the VAR screen was relentless for Liverpool and deprived the visitors of the scoreboard. And when referee Attwell used the screen on the wing to fine-tune Andrew Roberton’s kick on Brighton forward Danny Welbeck at 16 meters, all the bad things were three for Liverpool:

Penalty for Brighton, Pascal Gross hit the ball in the middle of the goal – and the score of one of the Germans sent the other to despair: because it was then that Klopp reacted by applauding the referee team ironically. To review the decision, it must be “clear and distinct,” Henderson notes, referring to the VAR rule that if video assistance is to verify individual incidents, in principle there must be an obvious error of judgment on the part of the judge.

Neal Maupay could have been the one to make it 1-0. The Brighton striker, like his teammate Pascal Gross, also had the opportunity from the penalty spot, this at 20 minutes. But where his teammate shot down the middle, Maupay put the ball out, and just six minutes later he had to leave the field.
