Norwegian-Palestinian Terrorists Extradited to France – NRK Norway – Summary of news from different parts of the country

The survivors had almost given up hope that the French police would hold someone responsible for the bloody terrorist attack. But now you can go to trial.

The attack took place in the middle of lunchtime one day in August 38 years ago. Four men in light suits drove to the Goldenberg restaurant in a white car. They attacked the restaurant with an automatic rifle, threw a grenade and shot random victims. After firing more than 70 shots, they calmly crossed the street and fired at anything that moved. Then they left the scene.

– The PST can confirm that the terrorist terrorists today had their complaint processed by the King in the Council and it was rejected. This means the transfer will be implemented now in ten days, says Anett Aamodt, information advisor at PST to NRK on Friday.

The extradition is now agreed directly between the Norwegian and French police, confirms PST.

Anonymous defectors

Following a prolonged and renewed investigation, the French police issued arrest warrants for three men. All three were believed to be affiliated with the terrorist group Abu Nidal. Several defectors had singled out the suspects with a promise to keep them anonymous. The victims recognized the alleged perpetrators when they were shown photographs.

The extradition request was made in 2015. One of the suspects lived in Jordan, one in the Palestinian territories of Ramallah and one in Skien.

At that time, the Norwegian authorities had no legal authority to extradite the accused, as the case was criminally out of date in Norway. But a year ago, the arrest warrant clause in the penal code was extended to apply to all EU countries. Therefore, the 61-year-old man is now being extradited.

– Not guilty

The Norwegian-Palestinian applied for asylum in Norway in 1991 and later received a residence permit and Norwegian citizenship.

– He denies his criminal guilt and says he was not in Paris in 1982, says his lawyer Ole-Martin Meland. He has appealed the extradition request to the end before the King in Council.

– I think it is completely wrong to extradite a Norwegian citizen to a country that has reserved itself against a similar extradition of its own citizens.

The 61-year-old man was arrested by the PST and placed in preventive detention seven weeks ago. The incarceration has been appealed, but has been confirmed in three courts. Both the Attorney General and the Ministry of Justice believe that there is a basis for extraditing the Norwegian-Palestinian. The request has finally been confirmed by the Minister.

– The conditions for extradition are present. We now have ten days to implement the decision, says Senior Adviser Annett Aamodt of the Police Security Service.

Our last hope

Attorney Avi Bitton in Paris represents two of the survivors.

– We ask the authorities for a trial to be held as soon as the Norwegian-Palestinian is extradited, he tells NRK. – It’s our last hope. Neither Jordan nor the Palestinian Authority will extradite their citizens.

Bitton says the victims have struggled their entire lives. It represents two of those who worked in the famous Jewish restaurant. -The employees have had a great trauma. They saw the shooting and hid under the table. It has been a burden for them, and a burden for the entire French society, that we have not been able to put an end to this matter. We hope we can get it now, Bitton says.
