Jonathan Pollard raced through the streets of Washington DC in his five-year-old Ford Mustang. In the seat next to him sat his wife Anne Henderson-Pollard. And on his heels was the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI.
It was November 21, 1985. Pollard passed the Israeli embassy near Connecticut Avenue and Van Ness Street in northwest Washington. In the car, the couple had passports, birth certificates, family photos, the cat, and the cat’s vaccination papers.
The Pollards were ready to flee the United States.
When the heavy steel doors outside the embassy opened to let in another car, Jonathan Pollard stepped on the gas and passed.
– The FBI is after me. I need help, he yelled at the guards.
