According to Aftenposten, both ticket vending machines and card readers will disappear from Oslo metro stations next year. Instead, more than 1,000 card readers are inserted into the subway cars themselves.
Little use
The reason is that the system is becoming obsolete, says Ellen Marie Rogde, Ruter’s chief marketing officer, in a press release, according to Aftenposten.
– The use of vending machines is so small that it is not sustainable to replace them with new ones. Therefore, the vending machines will no longer be in use after May 31 of next year, says Rogde.
Currently, only 2.8% of Ruter’s total turnover is made at the 170 ticket machines along the capital’s metro network.

The routes will already be in the process of installing card readers on board the subway cars. However, they will not be operational until spring 2021.
After May 31 next year, you will have to buy tickets from the app, Ruter’s customer service center and service points in Oslo. The public transport company also has a ticketing agreement with 240 outlets in Oslo and Viken.
The alternative for those who don’t use their mobile phone to buy tickets is travel money on a travel card, according to Ruter. This can be bought and replenished on occasion, and it should also be possible to subscribe to the automatic replenishment of travel expenses.
