Just after 5 p.m. Monday, police receive a report of a fire on an outdoor metal mound at the Stena Recycling waste management company in Skien.
– Burns at one end of a very large pile of compressed cars. There will be several tons in the burning pile, police write on Twitter.
The mound in question is approximately 100 meters long, 25 meters wide and 16 meters high.
Much smoke – wood to the hospital
There is a lot of smoke in the area as a result of the great fire. Police are urging residents in the area to keep windows and doors closed. There are no residential buildings nearby, but industrial buildings.
– Three people have been taken to the hospital for a checkup after inhaling smoke. This applies to employees who have tried to help put out the fire, operations manager Marianne Mørk tells Dagbladet.
People in other parts of the area are advised to stay away from the smoke.
It may take time
– There are very strong blows in the area. Do you know where it comes from?
– The knocks we hear at the site are natural in relation to the waste stored here, says the leader of the police task at the site, Marius Dale.
According to the fire service, it can take a long time to put out the fire. Construction machinery helps separate the pile to prevent it from spreading.
– The fire service uses many resources to section what is burning. The plan is also to drown this in water. The fire service will continually assess throughout the night how long we need to be here and carry out the fire, says Dale.
For a time there was a great danger of it spreading to nearby buildings. At around 7pm, however, police wrote on Twitter that firefighters were in control of the fire.
