Today, President Musa Bihi Abdi informed Saad Jidre’s Norwegian development assistance lawyers (54) that he personally guarantees that Saad Jidre will be able to appeal the death sentence.
– The president has explained that Saad Jidre now has until Thursday, December 3 to appeal the verdict.
– Then the case will be prosecuted again, says assistant attorney Farid Bouras at the Elden law firm.
Crisis meeting
On early Monday morning, President Abdi also convened the Minister of Justice, the judge in the case, the prosecutor and the supreme fiscal authority in Somaliland to a crisis meeting on the case: the death sentence against the Norwegian citizen Saad Jidre .
– I’m more optimistic now, but we still don’t know what may happen, aid lawyer Farid Bouras tells Dagbladet.
The trial against Saad Jidre has not been brought before an ordinary court, but rather a combination of a local district court and an Islamic sharia court.
Execution deferred
The verdict
The sentence says:
“The court condemns the accused to death by shooting. It is in accordance with the Islamic Sharia law, with reference to chapter two of the Koran (Al-Baqara) verses 178, 179».
“In addition to chapter 5 (Al-Maidah) verse 45 and § 434XCG”.
“Because he has committed premeditated murder by killing Ismail Ahmed Ismail with a poisonous spray.”
“The condemned man has pleaded guilty to what he has been sentenced for. This is confirmed by the autopsy at the Hargeisa hospital.”
The verdict has been translated into Norwegian for Advokatfirmaet Elden.
Deny the blame
– The verdict is completely wrong. Saad Jidre has consistently denied his criminal guilt, while the judge claims he has admitted it. In our opinion, the reference to Sharia law is also completely incorrect, says development assistance attorney Farid Bouras.

Along with attorney John Christian Elden, Bouras is now working on creating more letters of support for the appeal. Among other things, documentation has been obtained that the defense spray used by Saad Jidre is not lethal.

– Our client was attacked, fortunately he was carrying a defense spray that he had bought in a Clas Ohlson store in Oslo just before leaving for Somaliland. This spray is not dangerous, something we can document, says Bouras.
The legal aid attorney also knows that Judge Abdi Qawdhan Abdi, who rendered the verdict, did not understand the verses of the Qur’an, as mentioned in the verdict, and misinterpreted them.
– We have reached out to the political authorities of Somaliland and it seems that they have understood the seriousness.
– The next step will be to engage in direct dialogue with the clan leaders in Somaliland. Saad Jidre and the late Ismail Ahmed Ismail belong to two different high-ranking clans in the country, says Bouras.
Fear of blood revenge
– If we do not win the acceptance of the clan leaders, we run the risk that there will be a blood revenge, and that this could be a long-term conflict, says Farid Bouras.
