Deep medical conflict led patients to postpone operations – NRK Vestland

– We chose to postpone seven planned operations, says Helse Førde HR Director Arne Skjelten.

He is the human resources manager for the roughly 3,000 employees in the health trust, but has never before experienced personnel conflicts having such consequences.

The dispute between the doctors escalated when one of them was appointed as middle manager at the surgical clinic two years ago.

In December of last year, there was a warning on the table for the main tenant, but only now in November was the conclusion reached. The crown pandemic must take the blame for taking so long, Skjelten says.

– What we can say specifically is that it refers, and what the CEO concludes is that there is our mistrust between the doctors and the department’s management.

– lose confidence

NRK is in contact with the relevant intermediary. He does not want to comment on the case, but confirms that he is now starting work in another department of the hospital.

It has drawn much attention internally in the hospital that the labor dispute between the doctors now led the security representative to intervene and stop the operations.

– When we postpone these operations, we carry out immediate help in the usual way, cancer operations and other operations that are urgent, says Skjelten.

– How could it happen that the work environment in such a central part of a healthcare company could go so far that one had to follow these steps?

Experience has shown that these things will be something that will accumulate over time, and if you end up in a situation where you lose trust in others, it can often be difficult to develop over time.

– Heavy process

In other words, it was the security representative who walked in last week and demanded a “time-out” when the report’s conclusion was presented.

None of the relevant security representatives want to tell NRK anything.

NRK knows that intensive work is being done to re-establish a good working environment among the relevant physicians in the surgical clinic.

The hiring manager admits that it has been a difficult process.

– I must be honest and say that it has our heavy and extensive. Much of this is due to the fact that it has taken too long. In general, it can be said that the longer it takes, the more polarized the risk of that process becoming.

– Very rare

Skjelten notes that the patient’s treatment has been justifiable within 11 months of submission of the notification.

Therefore, it was also okay to postpone trading last week, he says.

– What did they tell the patients who had the operation postponed?

– Actually, I don’t know. I’m not sure what was said in the background there.

– Have you encountered anything similar in your time as a staff leader?

– Fortunately, it is one of the rarities. We are very concerned with making sure that if there is even the slightest doubt, we do it rather than being unsure whether it is justifiable.
