On Tuesday, the municipality of Tromsø tested the entire crew of the Russian fishing vessel “Aquamarine”.
One person from the crew was transferred to the Northern Norwegian University Hospital on Tuesday night on suspicion of covid-19 disease.
– The crew will stay at the corona center in Kroken and other suitable locations. Here’s what City Chief Medical Officer Kathrine Kristoffersen says at a news conference Wednesday.
Kristoffersen tells NRK that the situation is challenging for the municipality. Some of the crew are in quarantine on board the ship.
– But we have good contact with the captain of the ship, says the municipal chief.
Several Russian ships with corona infection
This is not the first time that Russian ships with corona-infected crews have arrived in Tromsø. In October, 24 people on the Russian trawler “Obeljaj” tested positive for covid-19.
The Russian ship was in Russian waters when the corona alarm was activated. However, the ship decided to set course for Tromsø. Later, a large part of the crew became infected with the coronavirus. The municipality of Tromsø asked the ship to go to Murmansk the day before, but was not heard.
Tromsø is one of the three Norwegian ports designated as a port of emergency, also called the IHR port. Together with Bergen and Oslo, the port of Tromsø will be equipped to receive ships with a lot of corona infection on board.
Track challenging infections
Several of the test results of the Russian crew will be ready on Wednesday, and those who are diagnosed with the infection will be transported to the municipality’s coronation center.
– The municipality received information last weekend that “Aquamarine” would arrive at Tromsø 17. 11 with suspected infection on board. We have received information from the agent that the entire crew tested negative in Russia on 4.11. This is what the head of the municipality’s crown center in Kroken, Ø claim Benjaminsen, says.
Infection tracking will only begin on Thursday when the crew is housed at Kroken.
– This includes IT solutions and interpretation services that must be implemented for such an operation to be carried out in the best possible way, says Benjaminsen.
The opportunity to get tested in the Tromsø crown center is not affected by the arrival of the Russian ship.
Tuesday’s summary shows that 47 people in Tromsø are in isolation, while 180 are in quarantine as a result of the corona pandemic.
Mass infection on ships in Ålesund
On Wednesday, another member of the crew conducted the test on board the ship MS ‘North Sea Giant’, which is located on the dock in Ålesund. The person tested negative first, but was tested again after developing symptoms. This test was so positive.
Thus, 11 of the 63 crew members are infected. It was on Friday last week that the ship applied for permission to enter the port of Ålesund after someone on board was informed that it was in close contact with an infected person. The ship was then on its way from Haugesund to Hammerfest. 24 crew members were defined as close contact with this person.
The crew is now in quarantine and isolation. Those who have been diagnosed with the infection have been transferred to a separate apartment hotel for further isolation. Operations manager Sveinung Økland says the infected are fine in such conditions.
– They have mild symptoms, fever and sore throat. No one has severe symptoms today.
The crew comes from Norway, the Nordic countries, the Faroe Islands, Finland, England and the Philippines. Økland says they have a strict regimen before the crew comes on board and that all foreign workers must be quarantined for ten days before they can go to work.
– So far, only Norwegians have tested positive, says Økland.
The rest of the crew’s tests so far have been negative. The herd is still in infection quarantine and, according to the municipality, the test will be retested towards the end of the week. Økland hopes that they now have control over the infection situation.
– Of course, there may be some positive test results among close contacts, but we hope that we will start to take control of the situation, he says.
According to Økland, there should be no danger of the infection on board the ship spreading to others.
