Mette Kalager is a doctor, researcher and professor at the University of Oslo (UiO). Among other things, he has investigated coronary heart disease in gyms.

– Of the 4,000 who participated in our study, we found one who was infected at his workplace. We concluded that there is nothing more dangerous to be in a gym than not being there, Kalager said when visiting Debatten at NRK 1 on Tuesday.

She is launching a frontal attack on the authorities’ decision to close all gyms in Oslo and several other municipalities, among others.

The authorities stand firm

Deputy Director Espen Nakstad of the Norwegian Health Directorate believes the situation is different now than when the Kalager study, among others, was carried out earlier this year. He maintains that it is necessary to close the centers.

– It was a well designed study, but sadly there was very little infection in society at the time, says Nakstad.

Therefore, he believes that the results are not adequate to say anything about the current situation with a lot of infection. There you see that many are infected indoors and few outdoors. This is the reason why there have been strong restrictions on indoor activities.

– Unfortunately, gyms fall into that category, says Nakstad.

Researcher: – I do not agree

Kalager says that she, as a researcher, understands the plot.

– But I do not agree. And what do you do then? One sees if there is data that can shed light on what the infection is like when there is increasing infection pressure. I’ve already done it.

The teacher says she has received data from the largest organized fitness centers in Virke. They teach:

  • that the centers have had 7.6 million visits.
  • that 210 of those who are registered as visitors to a gym have tested positive for corona.
  • that two, as far as Kalager knows, are infected inside a gym. They are both employees.

– We know this because the centers have a very good overview of their members and because the district heads and municipal heads of this country have been intensively monitoring infections, says Kalager before continuing:

– Actually, it is the case that the infection pressure in the community is four to five times higher than within the gyms. So we have to weigh the pros and cons, and the cons here are pretty obvious.

Nakstad believes that you have to look at the sum of measures. He also says that the strong measures are due to trying to avoid a total and long-term regional closure, so as not to make it difficult for gyms.

– We know that many infections occur indoors and few outdoors. This is also a short-term measure, says Nakstad.
