Grocery Exchange, Supermarkets | Testing food prices: this is what Kolonial differs from low price chains

Colonial still has something to do before catching up with the low-price chains. The grocery expert still believes there are good reasons to buy food online rather than in the store.

This week we checked the prices of 24 items in the discount chains and Kolonial.no. Here, Kiwi is the best of the four chains with a total price of NOK 687.90.

Then Extra comes in second, just under three crowns behind Kiwi, while Rema 1000 is up to 20.60 crowns behind the award winner.

Finally, we find Kolonial.no: 7.4 percent less than Kiwi, with a total price of NOK 738.80 for all items. At the same time, there may also be additional costs:

Depending on where you live, whether you are a regular or not, and the time of day you want delivery, shipping may cost something. Also, there are 59 crowns for an order of less than 600 crowns and 29 crowns if you do not order 800 crowns or more.

It should be equally affordable

Grocery expert Erik Fagerlid doesn’t think the difference between Kolonial and Kiwi is something to react to.

– It is not much, because all the logic is that you should not go out in bad November weather, with angry children, costs for barriers and fuel, and if all this costs you something more than seven percent extra, it is a good job Kolonial. no, he tells Nettavisen.

– If they do not make consumers willing to pay that much more for products to be delivered home, the concept has failed. Getting rid of the hassle of physically going to the store should be worth something, he notes.

Fagerlid says that Kolonial should target people in the limited time, and this is what they also play at; you get rid of the stress and hassle of going to the store yourself.

Commercial director Tor Erik Aag at Kolonial.no, however, says their long-term goal is for them to be as affordable as low-priced chains, including shipping costs.

– We are increasingly efficient. Now it was a bit above Kiwi in product prices this week, but we are usually much closer to Kiwi, he says.

Minor price difference

Many of the same items that we have included in this week’s pricing test were also included in the last week of May test, but there were multiple items at the time. Then, however, there was an overall higher price difference between the Rema award winner and Kolonial.no: 8.36 percent.

One of the items that differs the most from May and now is the price of Synnøve yellow cheese, where Kolonial was exactly the same as the low-price chains: NOK 71.20 in May. This week the price is 89 on Kolonial, while kiwi is the lowest priced at 67.90 kr.

Another item that stands out is Tine’s Mager Cottage cheese. At the end of May, the price was almost 29 crowns in Kolonial, five crowns more expensive than in the low-price chains. This week, however, they are more similar in price, and are just two crowns more expensive at Kolonial, and the price is 23.70 crowns.

Price corrected

After Nettavisen contacted Kolonial.no to find out what they thought about the price difference between them and Kiwi, they changed the price of Synnøve yellow cheese from 89 to 69 kroner per kilo.

– There is a product for which, together with Rema 1000, we had a too high price, and we have corrected it, says Aag in Kolonial.no.

– It should also be smart for the wallet to buy from Kolonial.no, and in last week’s comparison, Kolonial.no was ten times more expensive than Kiwi in a three times larger shopping cart, Aag notes.

Rema, which came in third behind Kiwi and Extra, has also corrected the price of Synnøve yellow cheese after Nettavisen contacted.

– The price difference here is made up of one product, Synnøve yellow cheese, which we have for the same low price as the competitors, only in half-kilo packs, says Calle Hägg, PR and communications manager at Rema 1000.

If you buy two packages of half a kilo, the price per kilo will be equal to the price of Kiwi and Coop.

– In this way, customers can be assured that they will continue to get the lowest possible prices on Rema 1000, although there can sometimes be differences in different sizes. To rule out any confusion, we reduce the price to the same price per kilo for large packages, says Hägg.

Please note that prices may have changed since prices were checked on Tuesday morning.
