– We are aware that this type of tablet can be found on the market in many cities in Norway, and I believe that you will find them in almost all police districts, says research leader Yngve Myrvoll in the Troms police district.

The pill in question is called Ksalol. Earlier this week, it emerged that three men in their 20s had died of an overdose in Tromsø after taking Ksalol.

On Tuesday, five people in Harstad were arrested and 1,700 pills were seized. One of the detainees has been taken into custody.

– The person who is incarcerated has a long record of sins, and the reason was the danger of recurrence, says Morten Hole in the Harstad police district.

Also seized in Nordland

Ksalol has also been seized in Salten, Lofoten and Vesterålen.

– The tablets are life threatening. We have reason to believe that this drug is spreading across Nordland and we would strongly warn against its use, says Finn Erik Rødsand in the Nordland police district.

The leader of the investigation, Ynge Myrvoll, says they are also aware that he is on rotation in Trondheim.

– What we fear about these tablets is that they contain very powerful substances that in combination with alcohol and other preparations are deadly.

It can be fatal alone

Police are now working on analyzing the tablets to find out exactly what they contain. If it turns out that there are pirated pills that contain fentanyl, the matter will get even worse.

– Then those pills alone will be fatal, says Myrvoll.

Police cannot say for sure where the pills came from. However, they know that it is being prepared in Eastern Europe and are smuggled into the country. Now work is under way to track down the pills and who is selling them.

– Probably sold on some of the usual channels where drugs are sold. Plus, we know it’s widespread on social platforms like Snapchat, Myrvoll says.

He has no doubt that they will make more arrests.

– We follow up on tips and do what we can to control the parties that are out there. We are very active now and are collaborating with various police districts to try to see the connections in the distribution link, Myrvoll says.

Warns the deceased’s girlfriend

NRK has spoken to a friend of one of those who died of an overdose in Tromsø after taking Ksalol. She bought the pills herself and says they looked like they had been bought at a pharmacy.

– I want to warn people not to buy foreign drugs. You don’t know what’s in them. Suddenly it’s fentanyl, then you’ve lost your best friend, says the woman.

Also, it warns people not to play with a drug they don’t know what it is.

Kristian Aagaard is a volunteer for the street magazine “Virkelig” in Tromsø.

He knows very well the heavy environments of the city. The three overdose deaths have a completely different setting.

– They are young people who are not in the environment of drugs and think that the tablets are safe. They have gone unnoticed, says Aagaard.

He believes that the key to avoiding multiple Ksalol overdose deaths is providing more information.

– Honest information, sincere information and images in which it can be recognized. People understand that this is scary, he says.

Depending on tips

– It is always very sad and pointless when such things affect young people.

That’s what Tromsø’s municipal chief Kathrine Kristoffersen says.

– It is important to talk with your young people about the dangers that may be related to drug use. Especially substance abuse and illegal drugs, he says.

– We also depend completely on the advice of the public, says Myrvoll.
