ConocoPhillips has made a discovery 4.5 kilometers below the seabed. The company will assess whether the gas is worth collecting.

The “Leiv Eriksson” exploration platform found gas after drilling to a depth of 400 meters in the Norwegian Sea, off Brønnøysund. Here photographed on a previous occasion.

The gas discovery was made 27 kilometers southwest of the Skarv field and 240 kilometers northwest of Brønnøysund, in the central part of the Norwegian Sea.

The oil company will now consider whether this gas can be connected to other discoveries in the vicinity and developed using the infrastructure that already exists in the Norwegian Sea.

The discovery is between 8 and 30 million standard cubic meters (Sm³) of oil equivalents recoverable with gas, reports the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. This corresponds to between 50 and 189 million barrels of oil equivalent.

The well struck sandstone strata in the Lange Formation with moderate but uncertain reservoir quality. The gas / water contact was not reached.

The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 4,960 meters below sea level and was completed in the Lange Formation. The depth of the sea is 400 meters. The well is now plugged and permanently abandoned.

The Leiv Eiriksson drilling rig will now continue drilling for ConocoPhillips, another location in the Norwegian Sea.
