This is confirmed by the International Cycling Union (UCI) on Wednesday.
Team Jumbo-Visma Groenewegen rider and compatriot Fabio Jakobsen battled for victory on the first stage in Poland around August. Jakobsen had great speed on the outside, and Groenewegen pushed him against the fence.
Jakobsen was thrown over the billboards. The injuries were so severe that he was placed in an artificial coma. At one point, he was in mortal danger.

Fortunately, Jakobsen survived, but he will carry the injuries after the rollover with him for the rest of his life.
Groenewegen hasn’t ridden since Jakobsen is terrified. The sprint star has been clearly affected by the incident. He maintains that the intention was never to harm Jakobsen.
– The accident in the first stage in Poland will always be a black chapter in my career. During the sprint, I changed direction from my line. Sorry because I want to be a fair sprinter. The consequences are very regrettable and serious. I am well aware of this and I hope it has been an important lesson for all sprinters. I closely follow the news about Fabio’s training. I can only hope that one day he will return, Groenewegen says in a press release.
The UCI bans Groenewegen for nine months retroactively. This means that you cannot ride your bike until May 7. Groenewegen misses all the spring classics, but the Dutchman is back the day before the Giro d’Italia starts.
