The president still makes himself inaccessible to the media and the public.
At the same time, he is blocking Joe Biden’s opportunities to carry out a transfer of power, despite Biden’s clear victory in the presidential election.
Trump is the first US president to challenge the results of a presidential election that he himself lost, has refused to admit electoral defeat and has initiated several fragile lawsuits in the states where Biden won.
Several of the lawsuits were immediately dismissed by the court, and others have little chance of doing anything about Biden’s slim but compelling margins. Trump’s attempt to hold on to power has become overwhelming, for a man who often makes sure to call his opponents “losers.”
Does not appear, does not speak
He has avoided appearing in public, and all the usual work that comes with the presidency seems to have been put aside. The president admitted he played golf a couple of times this weekend, but in exchange, among other things, daily intelligence briefings were removed from the program.
Trump also does not speak on the phone with Fox News or other journalists. In return, he is very active on Twitter, mostly tweeting about what he says was election fraud. The only notable presidential action Trump has taken in the past week was to fire his defense secretary Mark Esper that day, also on Twitter.
Donald Trump has not invited Joe Biden to the White House for a chat, as is tradition for incoming presidents and presidents. Nor has it allowed Biden to gain access to government offices, funds and expertise, as has been done previously. The GSA, led by Trump-appointed Emily Murphy, has not contacted Biden.
Biden let the chaos lie
Biden, who received a record number of votes but also acknowledges that nearly half of voters voted for Trump, chooses to ignore the chaos. He barely mentions Trump in his speeches and has already created a group of experts to plan how to deal with the corona pandemic.
In Washington, there is speculation about who will finally convince Trump that the battle is lost. President George W. Bush, who is the only Republican president still alive, has congratulated Biden on his electoral victory, but he is among the few members of the party. On Monday, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made clear that he believes Trump has every right to challenge the election results in court.
Barr tries to intervene
None of Trump’s demands appear to have the potential to change the election results, and even the planned reelection in Georgia will not have the potential to tip the bill in his favor. However, Trump’s attorney general, Bill Barr, has opened up to the use of federal justice authorities to investigate certain allegations of voter fraud.
Barr added that the frivolous and speculative allegations of voter fraud should not be grounds for opening federal investigations, but the statement nonetheless raised concerns that Trump will go even further. The head of the department for investigation of crimes related to the elections of the Ministry of Justice, Richard Pilger, resigned that day.
Joe Biden’s inauguration as the 46th president of the United States will take place on January 20, in 71 days.
