The municipality believes the outbreak is limited, but due to the extent to which they have seen crisis personnel and will implement measures in consultation with the shipyard. On Monday, Mayor Kjell Eide (Labor Party) called a press conference.

– There is an outbreak associated with Havyard and we have had a crisis management meeting. 73 people are in quarantine, following 12 positive test results on Sunday, Eide said during the press conference.

The municipality will now send people who are quarantined but do not show symptoms to their countries of origin.

All cases of infection can be traced back to the yard. The source of the infection is said to be a foreign worker who arrived in Norway on October 26.

– It was negative at the entrance, but positive a couple of days later, Eide said during the press conference.

The municipality has a red level, so you will have to be careful.

– The sports hall will be closed and we will take special care in the residence. Schools and kindergartens will be open as usual, he says.

The municipal doctor reviews the routines

The municipality has also had a meeting with the lease in Havyard.

– They take it seriously, but we had to come together to see what we do next. We can’t just let this go, he says.

22 people are now isolated in the courtyard area. Also this time, it is the import infection that has brought the virus to Hyllestad.

– It also appears that the spread of the infection has occurred within the yard where the workers live. Therefore, the municipality questions whether employees can maintain the quarantine, says Eide.

Now the municipal doctor must review the routines and see if more measures are implemented.

– We are analyzing whether the shipyard, for example, should be closed for a few days. Routines have changed since the previous outbreak and workers live in private rooms, among other things, says Eide, who also adds that the municipality is better equipped to deal with a major outbreak now.

– It is not surprising

This weekend, six new infections were discovered in Havyard. They were in quarantine from the start and came from an area with high infection. All those who tested positive were seen in isolation and close contacts are in quarantine.

In recent days, the number rises to about 20 infected, says the mayor. He says the outbreak was not entirely unexpected.

– It was probably not surprising that there could be something else, but there are some more infections than we expected, says Eide.

At Erna Braastad’s hair salon in Leirvik, much of the talk today has been about the outbreak. She thinks it is sad that the infection has broken out.

– We must trust that Havyard is in control, but it is broken that there are even more cases of infection. Now we feel like we were in control, he says.

High level of infection

The shipyard has been hit hard by corona infections from foreign workers. More than 100 employees tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this fall, and Hyllestad had an infection level of one hundred red gongs.

Many of the employees were caged in barracks and several of the isolates were transferred to a hotel in Bergen.

The shipyard has also been in financial trouble for some time, and in early November news came that the shipyard was downsizing and that more than 100 employees will lose their jobs next year.

In the municipality of 1,500 inhabitants, more than 700 people have been quarantined for corona outbreaks.
