Vålerenga’s second best points catch in 25 years – VG

Fagermo himself must smile when VG tells him the facts: that his VIF team may go against the best points capture in 25 years.

– Interesting, says Fagermo, who is surprised that the club already in its first season is fighting for medals in the Elite Series.

The only season in which Vålerenga captured more points after 24 league games than now, was not actually the year that VIF won the series, in 2005. Future champions Kjetil Rekdal had the same score, 45, after of 24 league rounds. But Martin Andresen’s 2010 silver team had captured 49 points after 24 games in 2010.

– My goal is to win gold

Fagermo had never imagined that VIF would have 45 points right now, or would be in a position to fight Molde and Rosenborg for places behind the magnificent Bodø / Glimt as early as 2020. It’s even more rewarding, and he thinks hard about the reason. It is that the younger players of the club have really taken steps.

– The score, and that we can currently play for medals, tells me that the project I was destined to lead is underway, says Dag-Eilev Fagermo to VG. He adds that of course it also says a lot about the poor performance of this club, which has only happened once before, in 25 years, that VIF has captured more than 45 points after 24 games.

– Obviously very bad. And my goal is to win gold, with Vålerenga. And I think we can do that. In reality, only Brann and Rosenborg should have the resources that Vålerenga should have. As a club from Norway’s biggest city, we should be there every season, believes Fagermo.

The recipe

He points out three things that have probably led to Vålerenga already being a medal candidate:

* Demands every day, sometimes demands so harsh that players react.

* Fewer injuries and fewer cards mean Fagermo can play for the same team almost every time.

* Hunger: Fagermo players and players Fagermo.

– We have already achieved stability in young players like Kristoffer Klaessson, Christian Borchgrevink, Ivan Näsberg, Aron Dønnum and Osame Sahraoui. I didn’t think it would go that fast, but they’ve really impressed me, says Fagermo.

One before the break and one just before the end was enough, and Vålerenga continues his rise in Norwegian football, thanks to Herolind Shala and Mathias Vilhjalmsson.

Midfielder Shala scored the first goal of the match, six minutes before the break. Substitute Vilhjalmsson scored the last one, six minutes before the end. The scores mean Dag-Eilev Fagermo is having a nice Monday, where he can see from the table that his new club will likely fight medal wholesalers like Rosenborg and Molde until the final round of the series.

Shala’s goal was Vålerenga’s fourth goal chance of the match, and there were to be two more before the break, while Odd failed to create a single one. So the advantage at halftime was well deserved. And Vålerenga played a good game against the old Fagermo club.

Odd took over more after the break, and they finally managed to create a couple of dangers in front of Kristoffer Klaesson in the Vålerenga goal as well. Substitute Robin Simovic had the biggest chance, after 73 minutes, but Klaesson masterfully saved the attempt.

And when Odd’s pressure eased, there was a lot of Vålerenga left. And six minutes before the end came the decision, when a substitute, Odin Thiago Holm got into a post, the ball ended up with another substitute, Mathias Vilhjalmsson. He did not hesitate, and so it was deservedly 2-0 for the locals.

– Very important and very good for me, says the “winner of the match” Vilhjalmsson to VG.

Thus, Vålerenga remains undefeated at home this season, and is now just two points behind Molde in second place and equal on points with Rosenborg in third.

P.S. An additional challenge at the rear: if Fagermo surpasses Martin Andresen’s point capture in 2010 (61 points in 30 games, Vålerenga must win the rest), they have Sarpsborg, Rosenborg and Start at home, as well as Aalesund, Stabæk and Viking away.
