After Newcastle was defeated on Friday night, Southampton now leads the Premier League table.
SOUTHAMPTON – NEWCASTLE 2-0:
Southampton – Newcastle kicked off the eighth round of the Premier League on Friday night. And after eight games, the English league has a somewhat surprising league leader.
Southampton is at the top of the table with 16 points after Newcastle were beaten 2-0 by goals from Adams and Armstrong. Former Southampton player Claus Lundekvam thinks the situation is great.
Hassenhuttl’s side have started the Premier League season very strong, and are nine and five points ahead of greats like Manchester United and Manchester City respectively. In defense of the two Manchester clubs, they have played two games less.

But it’s questionable how long the Saints can claim to lead the league in England. Already on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., Everton will face Manchester United. With a win there, Everton can take the top of the table.
Liverpool, Leicester, Tottenham and Wolverhampton have the same chance if they win their matches on Sunday and the other matches go in their favor.
Southampton Superior
In Friday’s game against Newcastle, Southampton had to dispense with top scorer Danny Ings, who is out with injury. But then another forward took responsibility.
Early in the first half, Che Adams sent the home team in the lead. Newcastle lost the ball in defense after a great effort from Theo Walcott. The same man hit Adams very well, who extended the ball in goal with a full volley.

Southampton had several good opportunities to take the lead, especially in the 82nd minute. Sean Longstaff slipped and slid on the wet grass. He then took out Lascelles and hit the ball closer to 2-0.
– VAR error
But before then, Southampton should possibly have had a penalty. Walcott was cut by Lascelles in the penalty area, and in replays he clearly looked like a penalty. But the situation was not reviewed by the VAR, and so the game continued.
That made Gary Lineker react, among other things.

Chris Sutton also believes that VAR should have done a better job in that situation.

Brighton and Burnley played the game earlier in the evening. That fight ended scoreless.
