The youths are students at Sandefjord Upper Secondary School. The school is the largest in the country with more than 2,000 students and 300 employees. He has had several cases of infection.

– Until adequate infection control measures are in place, schools should be closed, say Isak M. Mathiesen and Emil J. Archtander.

They believe that infection control measures in upper secondary schools are too weak.

They both have close relatives who can become seriously ill if infected.

School strike

Now the youth are choosing to strike.

– It’s scary when we live in a pandemic and people behave normally. They sit together at school. People need to sharpen up and see that it’s serious, Archtander says.

The colleagues believe that the national authorities cannot leave the measures to the schools. They demand the introduction of sanitary napkins in schools and public transport.

Until it hardens, they will not attend school physically or digitally.

– I would rather put aside my education so that society sharpens and gets rid of the pandemic, says Mathiesen.

Save the youth

Young people are not the only ones protesting. The Facebook group “School strike covid-19” has 328 members. And it is not without reason.

In Tromsø, the situation is dire. Now all the high school students are being tested there.

Also in Steinkjer, there is increased concern in schools after a VGS student tested positive for the coronavirus on Saturday.

The municipality is now experiencing a wide spread of the infection where foreign labor is the starting point. Since Sunday, 790 people have been tested.

– It’s a terrible situation we are in. Of course you get scared. At least when there has been an infection at school, says student Anna Martinsen Berge at Steinkjer VGS.

– The student has been ill for three days at school. Then fellow students get anxious that we might be infected too, he adds.

Save the teachers

Many teachers are scared and frustrated by the lack of infection control measures in schools.

In Bergen, teacher Rolf Høisæter has started a separate survey on the infection among school and kindergarten employees.

He has found 209 caseworkers in the media, but believes the actual number is much higher.

– Teachers meet every day between classrooms among students who are unable to accept that it is a dangerous disease. They can’t keep the meter, Høisæter says.

He criticizes the fact that teachers have to teach whole classes in small rooms without bandages.

– The only help we have is Antibac. It would not have been allowed anywhere else.

In the Facebook group “Teacher Status”, several other teachers express that they are afraid of being infected with corona.

Infection control professor at the University of the Southeast, Jörn Klein, understands the concern well.

He points out that upper and upper secondary students have a broader social circle. Therefore, they are more likely to become infected.

– Requirements for good ventilation and bandaging are key, he says.

Introduces the digital school

On Thursday, it became clear that Viken will introduce digital homeschooling for upper secondary schools starting Monday.

Sandefjord Upper Secondary School sends an SMS on Thursday stating that the school is at a red infection control level and that there may be schedule changes starting next week.

Vestfold and the Telemark County Municipality decided in a contingency meeting Thursday to wait for further measures.
