“BREAKING: Johnny Depp has lost his defamation case against New Group Newspapers,” the Twitter post stated.
It has failed
The British judge in the case, Andrew Nicol, issued his ruling online Monday morning, 96 days after the trial ended.
– The complainants have not been successful in their request for reparation, the judge writes, adding that the other party had shown that what they published was “substantially true.”
The trial between Depp and The Sun’s owner, New Group Newspapers, began in early July and three weeks were set aside for the trial, which took place in London High Court.
Depp filed a civil lawsuit against the newspaper, for referring to him as a “banker wife” in an article in 2018. Therefore, the star feels defamed and has demanded redress.
The trial has been one of the dirtiest. A series of shocking revelations have emerged along the way, and the details that have surfaced multiple times have been more surprising than the case itself.
Denies celebrity trio
Also present was ex-wife Amber Heard (34), who was married to Depp from 2015 to 2017. The revelations that have emerged have mainly revolved around their very turbulent marriage, where it is also claimed that both parties have been violent. By the way, both have denied it.
Back in court next year
It should be mentioned, however, that although the outcome of the trial is now known, the last word has not been said, as Heard and Depp will soon have their own trial.
The couple were originally scheduled to appear in court in Virginia in January of next year, but the trial was postponed due to Depp’s court decision to postpone it until May 3 of the next year.
In court, Heard will answer for the ex-girlfriend’s defamation charges. Depp is demanding a little more than NOK 450 million in reparations from Heard, while the 34-year-old, for his part, has filed a counterclaim and demands almost double the amount from the ex-husband.
This is based on the fact that he claims that Depp has joined the fray of a worldwide smear campaign against him.
