According to the Norwegian Medical Association, the government is intervening with a mandatory salary board in the medical strike.
This ends the strike, which has lasted from Monday, October 26.
– During this strike, we have removed very few doctors. This shows how fragile the emergency room is organized in many places in the country, says President Marit Hermansen of the Norwegian Medical Association in a press release.
Hermansen says they have been careful to remove the doctors during the strike.
– We have had a cautious withdrawal, with very few doctors. When the strike is stopped by 35 doctors, it is an example of how fragile the emergency room is organized and how limited capacity is. It clearly shows how little is needed before emergency preparedness in municipalities is affected, says Hermansen.
Stopping a legal labor dispute is a serious interference in what is really the responsibility of the parties. Writes the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in a press release.
– But as the situation developed, I had no choice, says Asheim.
Asheim emphasizes that he is unhappy that responsibility for the consequences of the conflict has been transferred to the government. It is the parties themselves that have the primary responsibility to find a solution.
Tor Arne Gangsø, director of working life at KS, is relieved that the strike is over.
– We are relieved that this is over, and I respect that the government considers the situation so serious that it had to intervene. The strike hit these municipalities very hard. It goes without saying that having to deal with a doctor’s strike amid a pandemic with rising infection rates is difficult.
Demanded that the workload be greatly reduced
Doctors demanded that the workload of doctors be drastically reduced, who work both as family doctors and in the emergency plan of the municipalities.
KS, which organizes the municipalities, did not want to introduce a border. They believe that the workload of GPs should be viewed as a whole.
The parties to the doctors’ strike are now meeting after Labor and Social Affairs Minister Henrik Asheim called the parties to a meeting.
Escalation announced
The Norwegian Medical Association has taken 23 doctors on strike in Tromsø, Trondheim, Narvik, Bergen and Stavanger. Then there was a break in the mediation between KS and the Norwegian Medical Association.
It was announced that the strike would intensify on Monday. And the small district municipalities are the most affected.
Twelve new doctors are expected to go on strike in the escalation.
The municipalities to which this applies are Kautokeino, Sirdal, Vang, Nord-Aurdal, Herøy (Møre og Romsdal) and Karasjok. The recall includes municipalities in districts with a heavy load of emergency rooms.
Hasvik has been exempted from the strike by the Medical Association. As the municipality is particularly vulnerable. In the municipality there are only two doctors permanently employed, and if one went on strike, it would affect the entire outpatient regime.
In the Sami municipalities of Karasjok and Kautokeino, they fear losing the Sami doctors in the strike.
– We have four regular doctors and a rotation candidate. As of Monday, half of our medical staff may be on strike, says Karasjok Mayor Svein Atle Somby.
