As much as 100 kroner separates the total price of the shopping cart on the most expensive and cheapest chain in our pizza test this week. Norway’s most popular pizza has also become up to 60 percent more expensive.
We’ve tested the prices at eight different grocery stores this week, and there are big price differences on some of the pizzas. We tried frozen pizza of different brands and in different types of chains.
Some of the pizzas are up to twice as expensive at some chains!
Rune Nikolaisen, who is behind Gjerrigknark.com, notes that frozen pizza is a classic impulse purchase for many consumers. And if you go to the store hungry, you may lose money.
– This is the “worst case scenario” for your wallet. When he doesn’t know what to eat for dinner, he likes to choose something easy, for example a frozen pizza, he says.
In the pizza test we have set up two tables. In the first table, we will see the prices in six of the chains, before, in table two, we will see only four selected pizzas, which were only the ones we found in Bunnpris, in the eight grocery players.
We have tried different types of pizza Grandiosa, Big One, from Dr. Oetker and one from Peppe’s Pizza.
In total, there are two chains that stand out from the crowd.

Defeated by more than 100 crowns
In the first table, we have compared the low-priced chains Kiwi, Rema 1000 and Extra, as well as Meny, Coop Mega and Kolonial.no.
Rema has a total price of NOK 510.80 compared to NOK 533.30 in the other two low price chains. It is the price of Peppe’s Pizza Farmer’s Meat Ham & Bacon 525 grams that gives the result in the total price, since this pizza is approximately 23 crowns cheaper in Rema than in Extra and Kiwi.

The total price of the other three chains, on the other hand, is much higher. In Kolonial.no, the nine items cost a total of NOK 592.90, in Meny the total price is NOK 623, while in Coop Mega you have to pay up to NOK 634.80.
This is where Coop Mega stands out. The figures above show that you have to pay 124 kronor more for exactly the same items in Coop Mega than you have to pay in Rema.
It is especially the price of Ristorante Mozzarella 2 pk, 670 grams that stands out in Coop Mega and Meny, and it is one of the reasons why they are much higher than the others in the total price of the shopping cart. There it is 33.90 crowns more expensive than in the lower price chains. Here it should be noted that these two chains did not sell a 2-pack, so we had to take the price of two individual pizzas as our starting point.
Twice as expensive
It’s not just Coop Mega that stands out, in a negative sense. The Joker must also be defeated by the competition, when we now look at table two.
Dr. Oetker Rustica Pizza Double Pepperoni 656 grams is twice as expensive at Joker as at Bunnpris. However, this can be explained by the fact that Bunnpris has 40 percent on all of Dr. Oetker’s pizzas this week. However, the difference is surprising: it costs NOK 49.74 at the bottom price and NOK 96.90 at the Joker.

Due to this week’s deal, Bunnpris also outperforms the low-priced chains at Ristorante Mozzarella 2pk 670 grams, where they are about ten kroner cheaper than Kiwi, Rema, and Extra. However, this pizza is not in the shopping cart in table two, as we did not find it in Joker. Menu and Coop Mega come out worse on this pizza, priced at 93.80 kr.
The final price also comes out of the shopping cart in general, in the four selected pizzas that are included in table two. They come in fourth place, right after the discount chains. Then follow Meny, Kolonial.no, Coop Mega, and Joker.
When we talk about doubling the price of frozen pizza, it is also worth mentioning the price of Grandiosa Original. It is true that there are no big differences between the chains, but this type is offered often.
At the beginning of October, the original Grandiosa pizza cost just NOK 29.90 in Kiwi, Rema and Extra, as a result of the price cut that Kiwi implemented in August. Now the price is NOK 47.90 in the low price chains, a price increase of up to 60 percent.
– Not for the benefit of consumers
Nikolaisen at Gjerrigknark.com says impulse pizza purchases provide good cash at the checkout for chains.
– Money can be made for food chains. But you, who buy prepared pizzas often, may know that almost every week there are one or more chains offering different varieties. With a little planning, you can save money quickly, he says.
However, he believes that the chains are too good to follow in price, as the tables above also show.
– It is not necessarily for the benefit of consumers. But at the same time, cheaper prices are possible if you check which chain offers pizza, he says.
– There will always be a difference
The online newspaper spoke to Coop Communications Manager Harald Kristiansen to hear what he thinks about the total price difference in the shopping cart between Coop Mega and the low-price chains.
– There will always be a slight price difference between discount chains and supermarkets, but also selection and personalized treatment, he says.

NOK 100 in price difference is a lot, but Coop justifies the price difference. Kristiansen says it is more expensive to run a supermarket because there is a much larger selection of products than in the low-price chains, plus the fact that you can get personalized service at the fresh food counters.
– It costs more money and therefore many items are also priced a bit higher. At the same time, it is important to note that there is stiff competition between the low-price chains, which means that some products here may be “abnormally” low and sometimes sell at a loss, says Kristiansen.
– Therefore, we will also be able to obtain a greater gap between prices in the supermarket and the low price chains, he says.
At the same time, he points out that Coop Mega has a number of special offer items every week, so good purchases are also possible in supermarkets. Kristiansen believes then that the total difference in shopping baskets is not always that great.
