On Wednesday, 297 other students and 24 teachers from the Kopperud school in Gjøvik were quarantined. Therefore, more than 1,200 students in the city are now in quarantine, reports NRK.

There are up to eleven schools in the city that are affected by having students in quarantine. Furthermore, 90 teachers from the Gjøvik schools have now been quarantined.

– Dramatic change

Gjøvik councilor Magnus Mathisen does not hide the situation the city is in.

– The situation is serious. A couple of weeks ago, there was no infection. So it’s been quite a dramatic change, Mathisen tells NRK.

Gjøvik has gone from being in a low infection situation to having a major local outbreak.

On Tuesday, 23 new infected people were registered in Mjøsbyen. 82 people have been diagnosed with covid-19 in Gjøvik in October. A total of 114 people have registered in the city since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to figures from the municipality.

– We have no guarantee

Kindergartens and schools have gone from yellow to red during the last week, and kindergartens have reduced their opening hours. The red level means, among other things, dividing students and children into smaller cohorts with normal adults as much as possible.

Mathisen believes that they have control over the infection situation and therefore no need to introduce new measures now.

– Right now we are in control, but we have no guarantee of how it will develop further. There are a few scattered exceptions, but we have control over all of them. Therefore, we have no evidence that the infection is spreading, says the NRK councilor.
