The Norwegian movie Barn, from screenwriter and director Dag Johan Haugerud and producer Yngve Sæther, received the Nordic Council Film Award on Tuesday evening.

“An ambitious and reflective work that with empathy and great seriousness enters the relationship between children and adults and asks fundamental questions”, the jury believes.

– I’m very happy. This is a great honor and glory, Haugerud tells Aftenposten.

The Nordic Council Film Award was awarded for the first time in 2002. It is the second time the award has been awarded to Norway. The first time was in 2016. Then the award went to Joachim Triers Stronger than bombs.

The movie Barn premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2019. It has received several other awards. The film won nine Amanda Awards at the Haugesund Film Festival in August.

The Nordic Council Film Prize is 350,000 DKK. The award is given to a film that stands out for its “high artistic quality and strong roots in Nordic culture.”

Haugerud has written the script and directed it. Barn.

To Aftenposten he says:

– This is a special price. Only one film from each Nordic country is nominated. So being nominated was great, says Haugerud.

But that doesn’t change your daily life.

– It’s just to keep working. But it’s nice to get recognition along the way, says the filmmaker.

He is working on a new script, for which he is now seeking support.

Preoccupied with dialogue

«Barn it’s a movie full of low-key dialogue that you want to animate. It consolidates Dag Johan Haugerud’s reputation as a unique filmmaker. Ingrid Åbergsjord from Aftenposten wrote this in her review.

When the film begins, the tragic accident has just occurred. An unconscious boy lies on the school football field. Around him, ambulance personnel try to save the 13-year-old boy’s life.

Åbergsjord further writes that Haugerud is a keen observer of human behavior. Use the “mystery” surrounding the senseless accident as a framework to say something about present-day Norway.

“Can we see the people around us? Or are we really concerned about ourselves? Such questions make Haugerud ask the audience. The film is an invitation to follow us at the seams.”

– I’m trying to say something about how we talk together and how we relate to each other. This is my project, says Dag Johan Haugerud.
