They prepared to make an emergency landing at sea, but they reached Sola. Now a loose disc has been found in the main gearbox of the offshore helicopter.

On September 29, the Sikorsky S92 helicopter returned to Sola from the West Elara platform. The drilling rig is located at the southern tip of the North Sea, on behalf of Conoco Phillips.
During the descent, the crew were notified that the oil pressure had dropped. An emergency message was sent and they were preparing to land in the sea if the pressure disappeared completely.
The helicopter reached Sola and made a “non-dramatic landing.” The Accident Investigation Board arrived at the airport that same night and began investigations. They found some oil spills, but could not give any explanation for the problems later. The main gearbox was then shipped to the manufacturer Sikorsky in the USA.
Investigations began here on October 20. The gearbox was disassembled and a foreign body was found. This is a disk, which according to Sikorsky is widely used in and in connection with the main gearbox, writes the AIBN in an update.
– Too early to conclude
Now investigations continue to look at how the disc has entered the gearbox and what has caused this.
Heidi W. Heimark is Managing Director of Bristow Norway Helicopter Company. He does not want to comment on the findings published by the AIBN because the investigation is still ongoing.
– We work closely with AIBN and follow up on their findings on an ongoing basis, but it is too early to conclude or say anything about what has emerged so far, Heimark tells Aftenbladet / E24.
