The vice president has the deciding vote in the Senate if the 100 representatives are divided in half, and Pence says he will participate if necessary.
But given that 53 of the representatives are Republicans, most indications are that Barrett will be approved as a Supreme Court justice just over a week before the presidential election.
Pence would normally be present in the Senate under normal circumstances. However, the vice president is in the middle of the run-up to the election campaign, and in addition, at least five people on Pence’s staff have been diagnosed with coronary heart disease in recent days.
