Havila Kystruten has asked the Ministry of Transport and Communications to avoid navigating the Coastal Route with replacement boats.
They write this themselves in a press release.
The company will sail along the Norwegian coast from January 1, but will not have a single ship ready for the turn of the year.
– No need
Arild Myrvoll, CEO of Havila Kystruten, tells NRK that there is no market for so many boats.
– As long as the crown is devastating and there are strict travel restrictions, the market situation means there is no need for full traffic on the coastal route. Therefore, we have asked the Ministry of Transport and Communications for clarification of what is expected and also if they believe that replacement vessels are needed.
Until further notice, Hurtigruten sails only offshore with reduced capacity – just two ships. But not Bergen-Kirkenes, as is the Coastal Route: the Ministry of Transport has asked them to only call at the ports of Bodø and the north.
– With the travel restrictions of the authorities, there is no market for all these boats. It doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better, Myrvoll at Havila Kystruten tells NRK.
None of the four ships the shipping company ordered will be completed on time.
In September, NRK was able to report that Havila had informed the ministry that they were therefore considering chartering two boats as compensation.

There have been several potholes in the road and reefs in the sea for Havila on the way to breaking the Hurtigruten monopoly.
– Especially this situation of the crown has made it demanding, because we do not know when it will go better. There are many unanswered questions, Myrvoll says.
The Spanish shipyard Barreras, which had to build two of the four ships, went bankrupt.
The “Castor” and “Capella” coastal cruises are being built near Turkish Tersan. These are delayed and released in early September.
– The first two ships we receive from Tersan are a bit behind schedule due to the crown situation. Actually, they should have been ready on January 1, but now they will arrive in Norway during the first quarter. Then we insert them immediately.
