The largest earthquake had a magnitude of 7.5 and a depth of 40 kilometers below the surface, according to the United States Earthquake Center, USGS. At least four aftershocks with a magnitude of 5 have also been recorded.
The earthquake occurred about 92 kilometers from the small town of Sand Point, and the tsunami warning applies to much of the southern coast of the US state, including the Aleutians and the sparsely populated places Sand Point, Cold Bay and Kodiak.
The danger zone stretches several hundred kilometers northeast of Cook Inlet, but does not include Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, which is located in the innermost part of the fjord.
The danger of a possible tsunami is continually being assessed, according to the U.S. Agency for Marine and Atmospheric Research (NOAA).
So far there have been no reports of damage or damage, and the USGS states that the chance of damage from the earthquake itself is small.
The earthquake affected the small town of King Cove, among other places, but everything appears to be intact, city manager Gary Hennigh tells the Anchorage Daily News. It says residents and workers at the cannery have been evacuated to higher areas until they learn more about the tsunami warning.
