The highest authorities in New York state have taken the unusual step of canceling a planned wedding, which should have taken place in Williamsburg, New York, on Monday.

This was confirmed by Governor Andrew Cuomo during a press conference this weekend.

It comes after state authorities revealed that as many as 10,000 people planned to participate, several American media outlets, including ABC News, reported.

The rabbi’s grandson

On Monday, the grandson of Rabbi Zalman Teitelbaum, the spiritual leader of a large Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish congregation in Brooklyn, will get married, according to CBS in New York.

Within the congregation, there is an event so large that not only members from Brooklyn wanted to attend, but members from across the state as well.

What authorities feared was that up to 10,000 people had gathered at various locations to attend the wedding or attend celebrations after the ceremony.

“According to our polls, there were up to 10,000 people planning to participate,” said Beth Garvey, special adviser to Governor Cuomo, according to the US online newspaper The Hill.

Maximum 50 people

Such a massive event goes against state guidelines, which state that a maximum of 50 people can participate in an event, as long as other infection control guidelines are followed as well.

Therefore, the event would in principle violate the rules of the state crown.

But it hasn’t been more than a week since another wedding in the same congregation drew up to 1,000 attendees in Brooklyn, according to local CBS New York.

Therefore, the state authorities are now actively involved in the case and prohibit the wedding from taking place as planned. They still give the organizer the opportunity to have a wedding, but then with a maximum of 50 participants.

– Same result and cheaper

Governor Cuomo used parts of his press conference this weekend to speak directly to the congregation.

– You can get married, but you can’t have 1000 people at your wedding, Cuomo said.

On smaller weddings, the governor said:

– You end up with the same result and it is cheaper.
