- Newcastle 1-4 Manchester United (1-1). Watch the Dagbladet soccer broadcast in the video window below.
Before the Newcastle game, Ole Gunnar Solskjær was clear that he wanted a response from his players following a 6-1 loss to Tottenham in the previous round, and he surprised with the team’s selection when he made five changes.
But the Christian wonder probably didn’t get the immediate response it wanted.
Newcastle took the lead after two minutes, before Harry Maguire equalized before the break. United put pressure on Newcastle, but when Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty kick, he appeared to be heading towards goal.
And it looked ugly for a long time for Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, but then the Reds put the turbo on and scored three goals from the 86th minute and out.
– This is an important victory. Now all the noise subsides, says Dagbladet’s Morten Pedersen about the pressure on Solskjær.
He believes there was an exit demand in the event of a United loss today. Solskjær’s body language also naturally changed in time with the Reds’ scores.
– Looks like he was dead instead, says former Molde and Vålerenga player Thomas Holm about Solskjær in Dagbladet’s studio broadcast.
The panel was particularly impressed with Bruno Fernandes’ 2-1 score.
– Oj, oj, oj. It’s a brilliant score, says Pedersen.
But the body language of the United players was criticized by Morten P:
After the game, it was a buttery Bruno Fernandes who appeared for an interview broadcast on TV 2.
– I think the result is suitable for what we do and we show what we can do. Today it was about winning and not about achievement, but today we did both, the Portuguese boasted.
– We knew it was important to us (win the editor’s note). We score fantastic goals. We did as in training and we are very happy, he continued.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær was at least as happy as Fernandes after the match. The Norwegian emphasized how important this fight was to his men.
– After the last match, this was a great match. With 1-0 in the second minute, he got even bigger. We showed a lot of strength and we dealt with the setback well and responded well, Solskjær summed up after the match.
– Our season started today, Solskjær announced and warned the competitors.
The victory was only United’s second of the season.
– I think we showed a great fighting spirit and character when we returned. We handled the backhand well and were led by a highly motivated captain, Solskjær said after the match in an interview that was shown on TV 2.
Nightmare start
Newcastle launched a good attack after just two minutes and Swede Emil Krafth hit the post from his right-back position.
The post hit Luke Shaw and the left-back sent the ball into the net behind David De Gea. A nightmare start for Manchester United, who had no margins with them in the first half.
Dagbladet commentator Morten Pedersen thought David de Gea should have avoided mishaps.
– It’s a bit typical for football teams that are in such a situation, the margins, says Pedersen in the broadcast of the Dagbladet study.
After 20 minutes of play, the game went to the red jerseys and Bruno Fernandes elegantly swung the ball off the crossbar behind Karl Darlow in Newcastle’s goal.
However, Juan Mata had a disastrous appearance. It is true that the disappointment would not last long. Just minutes later, Harry Maguire was the most insulted with a corner kick from Fernandes.
Maguire has had a strong start to the season, but was relentless in the air and stabbed the tie for the guests. It could also have been 2-1 before the break, but Newcastle captain Jamal Lascelles saved Marcus Rashford’s shot down the line.
Morten P reacted to the lack of celebration after the score.
– He can barely cheer. He had never seen that before, he commented.
After the match, Maguire received praise from Solskjær.
– I think it was exceptional. He scored the goal and set the example. I am very happy on his behalf, Solskjær said after the match.
Penalty bomb
Everything was open before the second half, where Newcastle had the best start. Five minutes into the inning, Callum Wilson can finish unmarked from five yards, but David De Gea was cat-smooth with a fever save and avoided scoring.
Soon after, United was able to take the lead. Marcus Rashford was fouled in the box and after looking at the VAR screen, Judge Craig Pawson sentenced him.
From the 11-meter mark, Bruno Fernandes is usually safe as the bench, but at St. James Park, the Portuguese was stopped by Karl Darlow who had a good day at work for the black and white line.
According to Opta, it was Fernandes’ first error in what was his 11th penalty for United after he signed for the club in January.
Former Molde player Thomas Holm, who played with Solskjær at the Romsdal club, was in Dagbladet’s studio on Saturday night. There he sacrificed felling Rashford, leading to punishment.
– Awkward defense, was the cash reaction to Holm.
– It’s a bad penalty kick, Morten Pedersen continued.
With just five minutes to go, Fernandes was going to take revenge for the missed penalty. The Portuguese took the ball almost to the dead line and in a beautiful way hit the ball hard into the opponent’s center.
In extra time, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford graced the result with their respective goals.
Thus, Solskjær and the United players were able to rejoice for the second victory of the season.
