The former captain of FC Copenhagen is part of the board of the great club. The 35-year-old is said to have played a key role in the decision to fire Ståle Solbakken.

It is the main Danish newspaper BT.dk that presents this big problem in a case on Saturday night. William Kvist was for several years captain and commander of the army in Solbakken’s FC Copenhagen team before putting his shoes on the shelf after the 2019 season and a total of 425 games for the club.

Now the former Danish national team player with 81 rojiblancos matches is a central part of the club’s board.

– Of course I can imagine that I have been more important than someone who doesn’t know much about football, but I can’t say more than that. Yes, I have been part of the board that made this decision. Of course, I have been looking at this for a long time. On the other hand, it is not just me who has made this decision, by no means, it is probably the best answer I can give, says William Kvist to the newspaper.

Known as a crash decision

The decision was announced early on Saturday morning that the Copenhagen club had chosen to fire Solbakken.

The failed results in the national series in 2020 were cited as the reason the Norwegian now has to leave the job he has had for several years.

“It is considered on the basis that other forces are needed to rebuild the team,” says the justification provided by the club.

For Berlingske Tidende, the board member, Kvist, says that he and the rest of the board did not intend to make the decision as soon as now.

– As a board you would like to have a continuous mindset, if the person has a roof over their head, about how we should do things and where we are going next. Maybe that was also one of the reasons why I came from the beginning and said that at some point you should have a change and have a feeling about it. By no means did we expect it to happen as soon as now, Kvist explains.

Kvist himself will take on a temporary role as the club’s sporting director. He explains that the playoffs of the series last season and the start of the current one have not been good.

Still, it has been said that the club will likely come out of there.

– But when you started over after the break with two good games, even against Manchester United in the Europa League, there are some obvious negatives. Then there was the Rijeka match (defeat in the Europa League qualification), but again the board has really worked not to have too much hot water in the blood, but rather to be cold. That is why it also happens today and that you do not get too excited, continue.

Kvist declined to comment when he began to think that the club had to make a change in the coach’s chair. He also doesn’t want to talk about the rumors that Solbakken himself would one day decide who should succeed him.

Temporary trainer

Hjalte Bo Nørregård takes over as temporary coach at FC Copenhagen. He has previously been the club’s Under-19 coach. As mentioned, Kvist will act as athletic manager at the same time that the club is in the process of seeking a new permanent coach.

Danske Tipsbladet pitches several names as possible candidates to take over the post after Solbakken.

Among them is the successful Bodø / Glimt coach, Kjetil Knutsen.

– Could FC Copenhagen replace Ståle Solbakken with another Norwegian? It’s definitely an opportunity and Kjetil Knutsen is hugely successful at Norway’s Bodø / Glimt, where the team is on their way to a great title, the magazine writes.

They argue that FC Copenhagen for the last 20 years has had mainly foreign coaches, but if they want to opt for Norwegian Knutsen, they will most likely have to wait until after the New Year.

– It’s hard to see him leave the club before Bodø / Glimt take the championship, they write.

In addition to Knutsen, Bo Svensson, David Nielsen, Christian Poulsen and interim manager Nørregård are also mentioned as permanent alternatives.

Finally, two names of seasoned trainers are also listed as available in the markets, namely Hans Backe and Norwegian Trond Sollied.

Solbakken quickly connected with his job as manager of the Norwegian national team after his dismissal. Lars Lagerbäck failed, as is well known, to lead Norway to the European Championship play-offs next summer after losing to Serbia on Thursday.
