– The employee who made a mistake is very sorry, says Coop’s communications manager.
“My partner suffered burns to his hands and had to go straight to the emergency room,” says a customer who stopped by the Coop Obs store in Alnabru on Friday afternoon.
Coop Communications Manager Harald Kristiansen confirms the error. Bottles of isopropyl alcohol are stored at the information desk in the store. When dispensers run out, counter clerks are responsible for refilling.
A customer had to return a bottle of Mudin drain opener. This is a product classified as “highly corrosive”. By mistake, the bottle was placed with the hand sanitizer.
Since then, a colleague inadvertently used this bottle to fill an empty dispenser.
Soon after, a customer entered the store. The client wanted to spread his hands and reacted to the fact that it smelled strange and started itching. When contacted by staff, they discovered the confusion. But before that, another customer had already managed to use the product.
Two employees had also stocked up on the insidious “hand alcohol.”
You will receive a patch on the wound
Colleagues quickly intervened. The Poison Information Center, the police 113 and the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority were called. Everyone was asked to rinse their hands with water. The four were then taken by taxi to the emergency room.
– All four have gone to a review on Saturday and are going to a new review on Monday We believe that conditions have gone well and that they will not receive permanent injuries. But it has been an unpleasant experience for them, says the communications manager.
The store has now introduced new routines on how to exchange and store hand alcohol.
– We will cover all the expenses that the clients have had and we will give them compensation for the unpleasant experience. The employee who made a mistake is very sorry, says Kristiansen.
