Two of the headliners from last year’s show have resigned from last year, and they are veterans of the DumDum Boys and Swedish rock’n’roll band The Hives, while Northern Belle’s current album “Nordic” (with Tromsø lady Stine Andreassen at the helm) is invited back after the 2019 Bukta concert for all in 2019. Also, a completely new Bukta name is ready, with the Trondheim Quartet Pom Poko.
– Was it difficult to persuade the two of you to give up their contracts?
– No, it wasn’t really that twisted, they were both very eager to get back, and it was great that they were both eager for it to happen. Plus, the names were good headliners for this year’s festival, which was canceled, so it’s gratifying to have two headliners in place already, says Isak Harbitz, festival reservations manager.
– DumDum Boys play in Bukta for the fourth time (also played in 2006, 2008 and 2016), while The Hives do their hat trick in Bukta (also played in 2007 and 2013). The Hives haven’t released any new material in 8 years. Both have also played several concerts in clubs in the city. Is it difficult to generate new top artists in today’s festival market?
– Yes and no, but I also want to add that it has been eight years since The Hives were last here, so it was time to get them back. And both they and DumDum Boys were at the top of the lists of bands the audience wanted, so it’s important to emphasize that neither of these was a backup solution or a “10th option” for us or the audience.
– Thought more generally, in a market where record sales revenue has plummeted due to streaming, while concert fees have risen.
– Yes, clearly it is something that we and everyone else noticed. I saw an estimate of what Jimi Hendrix cost in his most popular version, turned into 2020 money, and then his fees were about a million and a half crowns, while Ariana Grande, who headlined Coachella, has 65 million. Fortunately, this is not the type of headliner we are looking for. Haha!
– It’s wild, yeah. But would Bukta manage to land a band the size of Motörhead today, like you did in 2006?
– A band the size of Motörhead maybe could go now as well, but those who are a few notches above there would require a capacity of 30,000 – 40,000, and we don’t have that, so it goes without saying. So it has been and so it is. Before us veterinary this, that we will never be the greatest, and then we must try to be the best. The best names aren’t necessarily the biggest, either. So thank goodness we can’t afford Volbeat, so to speak. Haha!
– When you have been without reservations for a whole season, by cancellation, is there a better market this year, from the point of view of festivals, that makes it easier for you?
– It’s both a yes and a no. It is always difficult to find great and popular artists, but I understand what you mean, because now the table is a bit changed. Artists who could not play this year will be in the next round, in addition to new ones who were not in the previous round. Norway is also a country where there have been more and better support schemes in the management of the crown, and this could possibly have a positive effect on us, as there are probably more bankruptcies than here at home.
– The death of one?
– The other’s bread, yes. This is a difficult subject. We almost have to see, because it’s hard to predict right now. There are no clear A4 answers at this time.
– The Northern Belle also regularly plays on the city club stages, and also played in 2019 in Bukta for alle. Pom Poko, on the other hand, hasn’t played here before, and last year he released his critically acclaimed debut album, which Aftenposten named the best Norwegian album of the year in 2019.
– We are very happy to have landed them! Pom Poko is one of the most original bands in the country and in my opinion one of the best new live bands I have seen in several years. I think they are incredibly original on the album and explosive live. I Saw Them Live By: Larm And Was Taken Down By Them. They are doing something for themselves and will also release a new album in January. I shouldn’t be surprised if they make their way internationally in 2021. They’ll burn the bay next summer!
– Both Pom Poko and The Northern Belle have female front figures. Ergo, this year’s program is currently distributed 50/50 in terms of gender balance. It has been criticized before for the lack of gender distribution. Do we anticipate a change in the program this year?
– Of course it’s okay with women on the bill! We also focus internally at Bukta on increasing the proportion of women among artists, and we are working hard to achieve this. It is, of course, a group of great female rock artists, and we are constantly striving to focus on this, even though the ratio of male bands and artists is much higher. Then there will be no fee in any case.
– First of all, we booked a show that we think we can attest to, and it’s absolutely wonderful if we can help get more female artists on our stages. However, we always have at least 33 per cent Northern Norwegian names on the bill, and this is the most important thing.
– For next year, are you considering an alternative scheme, with fewer tickets, if the situation does not change? It doesn’t seem so cheerful now.
– We are working on the case, but we don’t have a plan in place. We have all been laid off since March and in fact we have only been working for a month. But we work normally and we are positive, something we have to do.
– I believe and hope that it is a festival, and there will be some restrictions, and if and if and you and daughter, then we will have to make a plan B and C. The audience was also very good, where more than 80 percent of those who had The ticket purchased for 2020 has carried it over to next year, for which we are very grateful. So now we release artists in the future and plan to implement them. We are on fire!
