Luka Modric leads his former teammate Gareth Bale on defense.
After seven seasons at Real Madrid, Bale returned to his former club Tottenham in September on a one-season loan, which his agent said could be extended for another year.
As a Real Madrid player, Bale experienced great success, helping him win four Champions League titles, two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey.
But the 31-year-old’s reputation among fans is still far from the best. During his years at Real Madrid, Bale was accused by fans of not caring enough for the club, and there were long rumors that the Welshman never learned Spanish during his seven years at the club.
Reject reputation
However, that should not be the case. Luka Modric says that Bale was well liked in the dressing room and spoke good Spanish.

– He’s never had problems in the dressing room, he’s a good guy. He spoke Spanish, he was joking with us, says Modric.

Last season was very heavy for Bale in the Spanish capital. Last summer, among others, Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said that the best thing for everyone was for Bale and Real Madrid to separate. However, that did not happen.
Turbulent year
Bale stayed at Madrid, but during the fall the Welshman fell out of favor with the Madrid fans when he posed with a Welsh flag that read: “Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order.”
This was not popular in the Spanish capital, and Bale was met with a huge bagpipe concert at the next home game for Madrid. The Welshman didn’t have much playing time from Zidane either, and he sat a lot on the bench and in the stands.
But Bale also managed to get attention from the stands. When the season reopened following the breaking of the crown in June, Bale found himself, among other things, almost asleep in the stands. In another case, Bale was filmed smiling as Zidane had used the last hold in a match, and Bale was unable to play.
The last thing that attracted attention was that Bale was not part of the Real Madrid squad when the Spanish giant faced Manchester City in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Zidane took the entire squad to Manchester, including Ramos who was suspended, but not Bale. According to Spanish media, Bale has asked Zidane not to join the important party.
– Not justified
Several of these episodes caused the Real Madrid fans to curse the Welshman, and in September Bale returned to Tottenham. But Modric believes that many of the criticisms are unjustified.

– It is not fair what is said about him, they have been judging him for a few years, but what he has done in Madrid is impressive and he will always be remembered as a player who has done a lot for the club, says the midfielder.
Modric encourages the Madrid fans to remember him for all he has achieved for the club.
– In recent years many things have come out and they have forgotten what he has done. As time goes by, they will remember him and how important he has been, Modric believes.
– It makes me sad
Among other things, Bale has been directly decisive in several important Real Madrid games. In the 2014 cup final, he won the game, and in the Champions League final that same year he scored the important 2-1 that ensured that Real Madrid turned the game around and won the final.
In the 2018 Champions League final it was also very important. He came in from the bench first and the brass kicked a crazy goal, before puncturing the game with a long shot a little later. This is what Modric does not expect the madridistas to forget.

– All people have their own behavior. He was like that, he didn’t socialize much, but in the dressing room he was very good. It saddens me that everything he’s done has been forgotten in the last year, says Modric.
This season, Bale prevents the Real Madrid fans from looming over him, and there was great joy among the Tottenham fans when he returned to the London club. He then wonders if the Welshman can find his old self at Spurs.
